This weekend was Mega Weekend Houston. This is the 3rd Mega Weekend we've had in Texas in the past 2 years and arguably the funnest (and definitley much more comfortable as there was actually A/C, unlike the last time). Our last 2 were held in Lewisville and Ahmed was gracious enough to host this weekend down in Houston. The turnout was great. Friday night was a MTU Junk Draft. We had 2 drafts pods of 6 each.

I started drafting quite a few Marvel Defenders characters and was lucky enough to pull a Wong. Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to my curve and ended up undrafting both 4 and 5 and my curve topped out at 6. When I opened the last pack the rare was an Indebted, which promptly went into my stack, mainly for my binder, but also to keep it from Dillon. Needless to say deck didn't function very well and I ended up losing all the games. The best part of the night however was Bigspooky's Versus Curses. That's right, Michael "Bigspooky" Barnes, the world's undisputed VS System Trivia Champion brought us a Trivia game of his own. Free to play, free prizes for the winners and "curses" for the losers.

The game consisted of several participants going head to head trying to name card names or versions of specific categories of cards. The one to name the most got a card from Bigspooky's binder. The loser or losers were then cursed. Each curse was very fitting for the topic of the game. For instance, Will ended up losing a round about Wonder Woman and had to refer to himself in the third person and when he did refer to himself he had to call himself Wonder Woman. Each curse had a spefic time limit attached to it. Some lasted all weekened! I participated in one VS Dillon, Spencer and Skylar. The topic? Versions of Juggernaut or Juggernaut Legend cards. Since there are only 9 cards available, it got pretty tought pretty quick. I ended up naming one but coiuldn't get a second one and ended up cursed for three matches, which happened to roll over to Saturday. The curse? I as well as the other losers, had to yell, "Don't you know who I am" at our opponent at the start of each match. Prior to ending the night Skylar decided to double up his curse and ended up having to sing the 1960's Batman theme song any time he was walking for the next two hours. Fun times were had by all.

Saturday morning was the main event. DC Alter Ego with DCL, DCX, DWF, DLS, and DCR were the only legal sets. I had been contemplating my deck for some time and had even sought the advice and counsel of some of the better deck builders I know. I received quite a bit of insight and my thanks go out to all those who assisted. Here's the deck I ended up running

Batman Alter Ego: While you control a hidden character, opponents can't play more than 1 Plot Twist per attack.
1 X Superman/Batman Robot, Supa-Mecha-Bat
2 X Superman, Last Son of Krypton
4 X Alfred Pennyworth, Faithful Friend
4 X Maggie Sawyer, Gotham Central
2 X Harvey Bullock, Gotham Central
4 X Barbara Gordon <> Oracle, Hacker Elite
1 X Batman, Problem Solver
2 X Power Girl <> Nightwing, Kandorian Vigilante
1 X Superman, Metropolis Marvel
1 X Kate Kane <> Batwoman, Katherine the Younger
2 X Batman, Cape and Cowl
1 X Superman, Deterrent Force
1 X John Henry Irons, Armor Aura
1 X Kara Zor-El <> Supergirl, Claire Connors
1 X Superman, Bulletproof

4 X Bat-Signal
4 X The Hook-Up, Team-Up
4 X Bat Got Your Tongue?
4 X Impervious
2 X Flying High
2 X Home Surgery
2 X Home Sweet Home
2 X For the Man Who Has Everything
1 X End of All That Is
1 X Early Edition
1 X Level 12 Intelligence
1 X Indestructible

3 X Kandor, City in a Bottle
1 X Phantom Zone

The idea here was to stall to turn 9 and drop Superman, Bulletproof who can't be stunned and then play End of All That Is (each player chooses a character and stuns that character and KO's the rest of their characters). Supes hit to the face for the game. Here's the rundown of what happened:

Round 1: Collin playing Legionnaires with Two Face as his alter Ego.
This game, the deck functioned extremely. I managed to go into turn 8 with 41 of 55 endurance. Collin had even initiative however his AE didn't like him this turn and he handed me the initiative. I dropped Kara Zor-El to his Mon Valor which gave each of his 4 Legionnaires characters +4/+4. Not being able to go through Mon Valor, I team attacked Kara Zor-El and Maggie Sawyer into his 6 drop stunning his 8 in the process.

1-0

Round 2: Michael "Bigspooky" Barnes playing Insanity with The Joker as his Alter Ego. My opening hand contained Alfred and Phantom Zone and I decided to keep considering the ability several possible versions of Insanity have to recruit from the KO'd pile. Due to The Joker limiting my ability to play multiples of the same PT twist, my hand was filled with cards I couldn't use that would have normally won me the game. By turn 7 I had 2 X Bat Got Your Tongue?, 2 X The Hook-Up, and 2 X Bat-Signal. At the end of turn 6, Michael played Usual Suspects searching out Shazam (that's right, Michael was playing a build that used several differenct Shadowpact characters, with Shazam being a win condition). Fortunately, for me that is, he only had 4 cards in hand for me to randomly draw from. I ended putting the 7 drop Clayface and 7 drop Shazam in his KO'd pile and then proceeded to remove both of them from the game via Phantom Zone. Unfortunately I missed my 7 drop and Michael was able to put me just negative winning by about 7 endurance I believe.

1-1

Round 3: Canadian Bacon playing World's Finest with Lex Luthor as his Alter Ego. This was probably the funnest game I played all day. Two very similar stall decks that had the ability to cancel out each other's effects. Each of us started with a Maggie Sawyer. On turn 2, neither of us hit our Alfred's however I managed to drop a Harvey Bullock hidden. Knowing what was in his hand would be a huge help in this match up. Turn 3 brought out matching Barbara Gordon's and the first of the negation wars. I negated his search card and he negated my negate and I negated his negate. Ultimately I won and he ended up missing Wonder Woman on 4 while I dropped Power Girl. So far so good. Turn 5 brough a battle of Superman's. Unfortunately for me, his Supes was bigger by a couple. I believe he underdropped Wonder Woman on 6 to my Batman. Turn 7 I brought my Superman/Batman Robot vs his Hal Jordon.
Turn 8 was his Martian Manhunter and I believe my Kara Zor-El. Time was called at this point and he was up 27-7 I believe due to having attacked Barbara Gordon and Harvey Bullock via Skreeeee! Per the rules, we head to the next turn to finish it. My initiative. The stage is set for the deck to flourish. The only thing that stands between me and victory is a negation eggect. I drop my Superman, Bulletproof. I activate Harvey Bullock who is still on the field to look at CB's hand. No Bat Got Your Tongue? there. Only 2 face down cards in his row of I remember correctly. I play End of All That Is. He flips Bat Got Your Tongue? from his resource row. He's got his Martian Manhunter hidden so I can't cause breakthrough and end up losing

1-2

Round 4: Elliott playing Darkseid Resource Row Disruption with Barbara Gordon as his Alter Ego. This game goes quite like expected but getting burned every time I flip a plot twist or location sucks. I missed my Power Girl on 4 but fortunately had a Maggie Sawer and a Batman/Superman Robot in hand to compensate. We went into turn 8 and he has his 6 drop Darkseid, 7 drop Kara Zor-El and 8 drop Darkseid. His initiative and I brick his attack into Superman with an Indestructible. He's able to put me negative. My only option is to stun all of his character. I attacked his 6 drop Darkseid with Batman for the one way stun. I teamed into his Kara Zor-El to get the stun on his 8 drop Darkseid. But forgot that when I stun her I get stunned back. He stunned bot hy 4 and my 7 drop while I got his 7 and 8. Unforunately that but me too far negative. Stupid burn. Another fun game that had we gone to 9 I would have taken due to End of All That Is That was in my row.

1-3

Round 5: Robert playing Darkseid with Two-Face as his Alter Ego
I don't remember too much about this game other then he didn't draw into his characters. He ended up having to underdrop quite a bit and I took the game on 6.

2-3

Well, it didn't go as well as I had hoped, but the deck was functioning beautifullyf and with a couple of improvements should be a fun deck to keep around.

For those who didn't top 8, it was another junk draft. This time MMK. OUCH! i drafted an all Crime Lords deck including 3 Vanessa Fisk for the attack pump. Got the Bye and lost the next round to Will. Unfortunately I had to head back to Dallas at this point so had to call it quits.

Thanks go out to everyone who showed up and to Ahmed for his hospitality. Looking forward to another one at some point. Also, my compliments to the cook for the breakfast that was provided.

Actually I don't think you had Kara zor el in our match. I believe it was Hal Jordan, superman, and somebody else visible I think, with Barbara Gordon and 6-drop Martian manhunter hidden. I then dropped Kate Kane to stun your superman/batman robot.

On your side I think you had superman bulletproof, the robot, and wonder wo
an maybe? visible and then you had Harvey and batman hidden. I'm not sure if you still had Barbara around at that point or not.

Yeah, you're right about that. I didn't have WW in the deck. Too long of a car drive home to remember at this point. Absolute great game and the funnest match of the tournament.

Now that I think about it, I think you also had Kate Kane hidden and I think that Maggie Sawyer was still visible on your side.

But yeah I agree, I thought it was the best match all weekend.

Versus Curses was definitely a blast. The Curse of the Juggernaut, ##### was pretty awesome. Unfortunately, Charles missed out on the Sunday morning shenanigans. We did all four of the remaining curses before the first round. The first two involved how people had to talk for the next 30 minutes: The Curse of Tower Talk (You must say everything as if you were shouting from the top of a tower) and the Curse of the Borg (You must end every sentence with “Resistance is futile”). It was pretty hilarious to hear several people shouting “Resistance is futile!” on a regular basis. Of course, I think everyone hated me for the final curse of the weekend: The Curse of Excess Equipment (For the next hour, you must carry your chair with you everywhere you go).

I really enjoyed the draft on Friday night. Marvel Team-Up was always one of my favorite draft sets. My non-character cards were pretty mediocre, but my curve was absurd. Double Black Cat; double Spider-Man, Parasitic Host; double Madelyne Pryor; and triple (!!!) Meatmarket. I could’ve had a fourth copy if I had picked it over Ego Gem. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the fourth copy to wheel. My match against Will could’ve gone better (hard to win on seven when you’re down 2-13 and he drops Spider-Man, Stark’s Protege). However, I suppose my double power up on Meatmarket to brickwall Dylan’s 4-drop made up for it.

I was fully prepared to lose and lose horribly on Saturday. I love playing Insanity, but I accept that it’s not a competitive archetype. Nevertheless, with The Joker Alter Ego, it was a pretty formidable deck. Here’s my build:

CHARACTERS (33)
Amadeus Arkham, Architect of Insanity
Jaime Reyes <> Blue Beetle, High-Tech Hero
Mad Hatter, Mad as a Hatter
Madame Xanadu, Cartomancer
Mary Marvel, World's Mightiest Girl

Mr. Zsasz, Scar Tissue
Rose Psychic, Ghost Detective
Two-Face, Jekyll and Hyde
Batzarro, World's Worst Detective

June Moon <> Enchantress, Good Witch
Witchfire, Rebecca Carstairs
Black Alice, Lori Zechlin
Matt Hagen <> Clayface, Mud Pack
Ragman, Redeemer of Souls
Scarecrow, Fear and Loathing
Dr. Fate, Hector Hall
Sondra Fuller <> Clayface, Mud Pack

LOCATIONS (6)
31st Century Metropolis, Team-Up

Dr. Fate's Tower
Stryker's Island

EQUIPMENT (3)
Amulet of Nabu, Unique * Fate Artifact
Cloak of Nabu, Unique * Fate Artifact
Helm of Nabu, Unique * Fate Artifact

The basic concept of the deck is to utilize The Joker's low endurance total to your advantage by playing Shadowpact. Since several of the Shadowpact characters have extremely powerful effects that only trigger when you have less than 25 endurance, you don't have to worry as much about having a lower endurance total to start.

Here's a quick rundown of my matches:

Round 1 - Matt (Outsiders w/ Roy Harper AE)

Matt started off pretty strong with some big early drops. However, I had a pretty nice early curve with Calendar Man, Great White, and Batzarro. Black Alice got my team-up online, and I managed to exhaust Matt's Roy Harper by winning at Roshambo. I was able to win on my attacks back on five thanks to several pumps in hand.
1-0

Round 2 - Charles (World's Finest w/ Batman AE)

Charles pretty much told the story in his write-up. I didn't play a character until Two-Face came out on turn three. However, I was able to use Two-Face's effect to get Mad Hatter into play. Unfortunately, Charles recruited Power Girl on turn four and wrecked most of my plans with Phantom Zone. June Moon got Fated up (though Charles did destroy my Helm with Level 12 Intelligence), but she didn't threaten Charles' Oracle because my endurance was too high. Ragman matched Charles' Superman on five, but I had to under drop on six with Madame Xanadu and Dr. Occult (though I now realize that I could've boosted Dr. Occult if I had been a smarter player). When Charles stunned my Dr. Occult and Ragman, I sat pretty close to death at 33-7. I used Usual Suspects to search out Shazam and The Phantom Stranger at the end of turn six. However, Charles snagged my win condition on the first card by sending Shazam to the KO'd pile, with Basil Karlo following shortly thereafter. Still, I had a play on seven in The Phantom Stranger; while Charles had zilch. Stranger took out Superman; Ragman and SKREEEEEEE! took down Batman; and Two-Face, Mad hatter, and June Moon took Charles remaining endurance.
2-0

Round 3 - Skyler (Shadowpact/Secret Six w/ Lex Luthor AE)

Skyler was playing the Shadowpact/Secret Six team-up deck that I build for him based on the deck that several of The Donkey Club members played at PC Indy 2006. The basic idea is to use Scandal to fetch extra copies of certain ongoing plot twists; and Lex Luthor to put extra copies of Blackbriar Thorn and Manitou Dawn into play. If you can pull it off, then you get two characters gaining +1/+1 counters for every Magic plot twist, and you actually gain endurance in the bargain. With Lex Luthor giving a permanent crossover, it can get out of hand pretty quickly.

However, I hadn't counted on how much The Joker's effect would cause problems for Skyler. He started out very strong with Blackbriar Thorn and Zatanna to my Detective Chimp and Tally Man. I tried a team attack into his 2-drop on turn three, but was thwarted by several pumps from Skyler. Unfortunately, this pretty much ran Skyler out of gas, and he completely whiffed on turn four. I, on the other hand, had a Fated up Batzarro. With a few power ups, Skyler was able to team attack into my 13/12 4-drop. However, Money Talks ensured that Blackbriar Thorn would stay off the board permanently. When Skyler had no play on turn five to answer my Ragman, he picked up his cards.
3-0

Round 4 - Tony (Arkham/Revenge Squad/Gotham Knights Insanity w/ The Joker AE)

Two Insanity decks meant that neither Alter Ego would do much in this matchup other than give both players minimal endurance. Of course, considering that my deck was designed to operate more favorably at low endurance, I felt that i had a slight edge. Tony's deck deck appeared to be more focused on drawing cards and forcing early game aggression. This was evidenced as Tony hit his first two drops while I whiffed on my first two for the second time in the tournament. Tony's Oracle on three was matched by my Mr. Zsasz. Thanks to his card draw engine, Tony had a pump to send his 2-drop up into my 3-drop. However, this play was just what I needed to get back into the game. I dropped June Moon, sitting at 27 endurance. Tony responded with Hush, Silent and Deadly. In my attack step, I flipped Spectral Slaughter to stun Tony's 1- and 2-drops. This dropped me down to exactly 25 endurance, and allowed June Moon to stun Oracle. Finally, Zsasz swung up into Hush for the double stun. We went into turn five with only our 4-drops. Tony had Catwoman, while I had Black Alice. Catwoman got some pumps and swung into Black Alice at 14 ATK. I chose not to reinforce and let Hush KO June Moon, so I took 10 and Tony passed on attacks. Instead of attacking, I played Divination; discarding Tally Man and exhausting June Moon to his effect. While Tony led 21-9, I was up on him by a 5-drop. Tony answered The Joker with Batman on six. However, I had plenty of pump to send Black Alice up the curve into his 6-drop. This allowed The Joker to lay the smack down on Hush; and June Moon to swing in directly for the win.
4-0

Round 5 - Gabe (JLA/Gotham w/Batman AE)
I actually had a pretty good draw in this game. I just managed to neutralize my good fortune by playing horribly the entire game. Calendar Man helped me keep pace with Gabe's Oracle. On four, Wonder Woman swung into Batzarro with a copy of Fury of the Amazons for the one-sided stun; and Death Trap sent my 4-drop back to my hand. Of course, the nail in the coffin was my own series of misplays. Instead of playing the sensible Black Alice on five (who would've easily taken out Wonder Woman on five and allowed me to play Money Talks or Tally Man to KO the annoying 4-drop), I decided to get fancy and drop out Scarecrow to bounce Gabe's Oracle. Of course, he used Wonder Woman's effect to bounce my Great White instead, and I died a little inside. That pretty much took the wind out of my sails, and Gabe crushed me with Superman and Batman on turn 6.
4-1

Quarterfinals - Ahmed (JLA/Gotham w/ Batman/AE)
My record put me in the Top 8 against Ahmed. I knew that he had a similar JLA/GK deck to Gabe's, so I was prepared to deal with Wonder Woman. Unfortunately, pretty much everything that could go wrong for me in this match did go wrong. I lost the die roll; giving Ahmed the even initiatives. More importantly, my draw in this match was nowhere near as strong as I needed it to be. While I had Batzarro for four, Wonder Woman and Lasso of Truth made it nearly impossible for me to do anything. I hoped that Ahmed would trade his 4-drop for mine; which would give me the chance to flip up Forbidden Loyalties and discard Tally Man to KO Wonder Woman. However, Ahmed seemed really afraid to trade stuns with me; and settled on attacking my lower drops. I under dropped on five with Dr. Occult. Ahmed had the predictable Superman on five, and he placed his Wonder Woman behind the mighty 5-drop. This caught me completely off guard, as I had no way to get my bigger characters over Superman to get at Wonder Woman. I team attacked through his 5-drop, then sent Batzarro into Wonder Woman. Unfortunately, I had no real answer for Bring It On; since he could redirect my Crackshot and Combat Reflexes. Missing my drop on six pretty much sealed the deal, and Ahmed took down the game.

In the semifinals, Gabe took down Travis in a JLA/GK mirror match; and Ahmed (who had never played against Blackbriar Thorn before) got steamrolled by Skyler. Gabe then took down Skyler in the finals (thanks in part to a misplayed team attack by Skyler).

Given that I had fully planned on losing more then winning with the Arkham-Shadowpact Insanity deck, I was really pleased with how it played over the weekend. I think that I would change some of the card choices slightly if I were to ever play this format again (such as adding more KO effects to deal with Wonder Woman!) Regardless, it was a fun format; and a really fun deck to play in the format.

After the constructed tournament, we played the Marvel Legends event. While my non-character cards were ten kinds of awful, I had a fairly decent array of characters. For the most part, I loaded my curve with the largest characters that I could find at each drop and hoped that I could take advantage in the late turns with bigger and better drops than my opponent. With the exception of Spencer (who had an absolutely absurd deck), I was able to win all of my games with this strategy. In the semifinals, Spencer scooped when I dropped out Apocalypse. Since we were fairly close in endurance, he assumed that the 8-drop plus any pump that I had would win the game for me. As it turned out, I had no pump whatsoever, so we would've gone to turn nine tied in endurance. He could've attacked with his 7-drop Hulk into my Thing without stunning; and I wouldn't have been able to attack Hulk with Apocalypse without stunning back. However, he honored the concession (since I had revealed all of my cards to him after he conceded), and I was able to take down Reid in the finals. I ended the night by taking some money off of Skyler in an impromptu poker game.

Sunday was short but fun. I was hoping to have the same caliber of ridiculous packs the last time I played Marvel Super Crossover. While I had a copy of Spider Hunt and Training Theater, my curve was horrendous. I made an effort at an off-curve deck, and only went 2-2 by the grace of a misplay by Matt. Spencer - who had demolished me in the final round of Swiss - took revenge for the prior night's events and thrashed me thoroughly in our quarterfinals match.

And that put an end to a very fun Vs. System weekend.

Thanks again to Ahmed and Dylan for hosting a great weekend at their shop. I had a great time hanging out with the Houston crew; and I hope that we get to do it again in the future!

Love the decklist Michael. I looked at Insanity quite a bit before deciding on my decklist and it didn't cross my mind to crossover with Shadowpact due to the low starting endurance.
