The story behind this tourney is both entertaining and inspiring. Apparently this playgroup discovered Vs this January when one of the owners of the store organized the stock of Vs cards he had purchased from another store. He made starter decks and introduced the game to his loyal HeroClix regulars. From the ashes of a dead game has arisen a twice a week Hobby League with a group of players that is truly enthusiastic about the game.

My Hobby League disbanded when the store stopped carrying the product, so none of us has played a competitive game of Vs in forever. Upon hearing about the Mega Tourney my buddies and I started to plan for it. I called the owner and he told me the above story and explained that the playgroup was extremely casual due to the lack of power cards they had, so I told my guys to take it easy on the power. I busted out my mono-Hellfire Club as we were playing Golden BYOT. My friends Rico played Manhunter Swarm, Josh played Crime Lord of the (10) Rings, Bradley played Marvel Knights, and Edison played Gotham Knights.

Round 1 - Marvel Knights - Bradley

I draw Mastermind and 2 Join the clubs to start, I keep and drop Courtney on 1, followed by Sage and Mastermind. His Black Cat and Punisher bring the early beats while Sage fills my graveyard with Mental characters. Turn 4 unearths Blackheart and he is forced to under-drop Morbius. Blackheart consumes Morbius' soul and we move on to turn 5 where Shinobi Shaw takes control. Blackheart KO's his Punisher and Shinobi swings free for 13 with Shaw Industries support. His Moon Knight stuns Shaw, but the Club exert their Absolute Power in response to a Quick Kill and Shinobi survives. Turn 6 I move Shinobi to the shadows and recruit Magneto as my singular character. He recruits Hulk, reduces his END to zero to make Hulk 32/32. Hulk smashes Mags for 24 total but when Moon Knight tries to finish the job Sage and Courtney use their Power & Wealth and initiate a Deadly Game and the mutant master of magnetism and Shinobi Shaw swap positions. Moon Knight tries to push through lethal but Shinobi is an Army of One and leaves me at 3 END for the win.

Game two starts similarly to game one, though he needs to Wild Ride early and often. He snags Blade in order to move my team to the visible area and disrupt my Sage engine, and on turn 4 Wolvie joins the anti-hidden crew. With my draw engine in jeopardy I'm forced to play into a bloodbath. Black Cat Flying Kicks into the now visible Sage for the two way stun. I force his hand by playing Flame Trap so he KOs Punisher to KO Sage. Blackheart eats Blade and Wolvie and Mastermind trade due to a double Army of One. I recover Mastermind and gain the board advantage of a 3 & 4 drop to just his 4. Turn 5 Shinobi joins the club and trades with Moon Knight, while Wolvie takes down Mastermind. Blackheart swings free for 9 due to a Hellfire Club +1 boost. I recover Shinobi and we are now even character-wise. Turn 6 I Hellfire Club Shinobi out and play Magneto. Mags swings for 14 and I pass. He declares his 6 drop into Mags, but I stun Mags to stun Moon Knight and then Deadly Game Shinobi into the visible. Shinobi and Mastermind revive Magneto with Absolute Power and Shinobi stuns. I Deadly Game again to create a 14/14 Magneto brick wall. Turn 7 I use join the club to grab Sebastian Shaw and show him a Power Play that forces his scoop.

1-0

Game 2 - Golden Age Marvel Knights

I'll skip to game 3 as the first two were one-sided affairs. My win was facilitated by Blackheart while his win came via Crime and Punishment and Quick Kills. Game Three was brutal and both he and I traded KOs early on. Going into turn 6 it was Shinobi and Magneto against his Natasha Black Widow and Daredevil Matt Murdock. I swing both of my characters and get him to 2 END and he swings back and stuns Mags with Daredevil. That 2 END is key as he cant pay 3 for Punisher's Armory. So when Widow dives into Shaw a triple Army of One gets me to 1 END. Luckily I choose to keep Mags instead of Shaw as I drew into another Shaw and played him. He is also forced to under-drop which allows my brickwall for the win on my attack step. WHEW!

2-0

Game 3 - Crime Lord of the Rings - Josh

Josh was running my 10-Rings deck but had run into Backfire a couple of times so he was 1-1 coming in. I had a massive advantage though: Blackheart would snipe Mandarin, Mutant Massacre could potentially kill his primary attacker, and Magneto facilitates the out of combat stun on a ringed-up Master Man. With no way to protect Master Man, this match-up was completely impossible save for a terrible draw on my end. Game two went to turn 8, but a Power Play to steal the initiative against his Sleeper and Master Man did him in.

3-0

Edison and I were the two undefeated but because I had to leave we chopped up the prize support. I would have liked to have played his Negation Centered Gotham Knights as I think I could have worked around his counters and out statted his generally smaller Knights.

All in all it was a fantastic day with a great bunch of new and old players. I'm already looking forward to the next Monthly Mega and am hoping that my enormous collection of commons, uncommons, and rares will find new homes in the coming weeks and months. I have soooo many under-utilized rares that I know will be enthusiastically used by the newcomers.

Also, if anyone is ever in the store's area I HIGHLY recommend you stop in. It is by far the cleanest gaming store I have ever stepped foot in and is stocked with every imaginable game, CCG, and video game terminal possible. And if you are a Hero Clix player....OMG! This store is Clix nirvana!

Great day! Great tourney! Great Store!

Thanks for the write up, your round one shows how sick Hellfire club can be when its running on all cylinders and that is mostly a "block" deck to use a MTG term

I just discovered this write-up and I'm truly thankful for the kind words. We have really enjoyed running these monthly Mega-Events and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Thanks!
