This past Tuesday we had a federal election in Canada. When the States has one we hear about who won in the news. I'm curious, did the Canadian federal election receive any media attention in the States? I wouldn't expect comprehensive coverage or anything, but was there even a mention of who the Prime Minister is? It was held the day after Bin Laden was killed and even the Canadian stations were only following the Bin Laden story until later in the day, so I wouldn't be surprised if it never received a mention, though it is a little sad that such a big event in Canada might not get any attention from the neighbours. |

"When I say this I am 100% not being disrespectful to you or your country. I didn't even know you guys had elections -KK You're doing better than me I didn't know they had a government I just thought it was all free love, mooses, and mounties. You mean you didn't even know Canada was a democracy? As you say, not trying to be disrespectful, I'm just trying to get a handle on how little the average American knows about Canada. :) There used to be a tv show here called "Rick Mercer Talks to Americans" where political comedian Rick Mercer would randmomly interview Americans and easily convince them of pretty far out there stuff "eg. "Did you know that Canada just got electricity from coast to coast?" People would actually buy that and extend a heartfelt congratulations on camera to the people of Canada). |

I kinda sorta pay attention to the news - mostly the top headlines. I'm sad to report that your elections did not show up on my radar (which was crowded with Osama stories and other equally important topics- like who wore what at the royal wedding and the fact that Miley Cyrus covered a Nirvana song). |

I saw it on C-SPAN while flipping through channels. Parliamentary politics fascinate me since there are three or more parties in serious contention (a rarity in American politics). You'd think the "New Democratic Party" and the "Liberal Party" would just end up splitting the vote every time (see Ralph Nader circa 2000). But somehow it doesn't collapse into 2 parties. Americans don't pay attention to elections in other countries, except perhaps Britain. Heck, 29% of us can't name our own Vice President. |

I would say that, had Osama not been dominating the news, Canadian elections probably would have gotten some coverage. Then we'd not hear about it again for a while and promptly forget. As it was, I didn't hear a thing. I'd heard of the Rick Mercer bit before and thought the premise was hilarious. |

I love poutine! I worked with a couple fine gents from Quebec a while back and they shared some of that deliciousness after a night of drinking. It hit the spot. Later, I tried "gourmet" beef bourguignon poutine in Montreal. Also delicious! Edited by axon, May 4 2011, 07:47 PM.

I usually keep a fairly close eye on international politics, but Canada just never blips on my radar. I guess that is a good thing, though. Usually the only countries I hear about are the ones with crazy leaders, anyway. |

In all honesty Hatman I had zero idea what Canada's goverment was. I am in no way political and I don't watch the news at all. Oddly enough I honestly had to think really hard when Punk made the comment about who the US Vice President was:p. later, Kj |

You're forgiven, KK. After all, the only time Americans know of another country's existence is when the American government invades them. j/k

Wait... when did Canada become a country... much less form its own government? Sorry... did not see/hear any news about your elections on TV/radio... heck last week was all that royal wedding cra... err... stuff. If it's any consolation, I did read some blurb about it in the newspaper (I think I'm the only one in my state who still subscribes to *paper* news). |
