![]() http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=32566 So what does everyone else here think about this? I for one see many positive and negative things. The most promising thing about it is that one of the big two are finally releasing all of their titles in digital form the same day as their printed material. If they can price these accordingly and affordably, they could see a whole lot more interest in their titles. The #1's alone will bring customers. The downside? Not too sure about the whole "modernizing" of characters and stories. Unless they're going to get rid of all the fictional cities these characters live in it won't matter. The bad? Jim Lee re-designing most of the costumes. His tweaks are too obvious and feel like 90's designs. He's still a good artist, but isn't nearly as good as he once was. I guess this is retaliation for Marvel becoming a Disney property. That and dwindling fans and sales. |

This is quite an interesting move IMO. I'd really like some more particulars on the continuity shake ups. It could be really interesting, but it could also be the push I need to finally cancel my standing order (which I just can't afford any more, even after cutting down). Just too early to tell right now. |

I saw this about 20 mins ago. As I wrote on Facebook: It's "Brand New Day" x 52. If this is 1/2 as horrible as it sounds, it'll be the worst thing to hit comics since Jeph Loeb. I really, really hate this idea. I will be jumping off, not on, many of the titles listed. Bad move, DC. |

As someone who now only reads trade paperbacks this doesnt appear to affect me at all. What surprises me is that a reboot only showed a one to two issue spike in sales for heroes reborn; so why take this gamble? |

Horrible idea. I love how DC goes. After Brightest Day when we kill someone they will be dead. No more coming back from the dead. Then they go and do this so they can revamp the books. This is just a dumb idea. It messes everything up they've done in recent years. I am willing to bet it last for a year tops and they correct it. Hence Heroes Reborn. later, Kj |

Same-day digital release is exciting. But what's the pricing? That's the question. $2.99 appeases the brick and mortars, but it's too high for digital. Should be $1.99 per issue tops, and preferably $.99 on #1 issues. But I wouldn't be surprised if they cave to the direct market sellers. The redesigns won't stick. Wonder Woman in particular. All in all, I'm glad DC is trying to embrace a new digital audience. Appeasing the 10,000 readers it has left with constant nostalgia-porn is a recipe for failure. |

Maybe this is a good thing. I mean, DC comics have been pretty horrible lately. In the past few months, I've been dropping DC titles from my pull list like bad habits. Batman and Robin, Teen Titans, Brightest Day... All Crap, really. Now that I think about it, Marvel is/will be doing some relaunches as well, with the Marvel Knights re-branded as "big shots" and coming out with #1's for the summer, now would be the perfect time to switch formats... But the question is should I do as Scott and buy all trades, or finally get that Android tablet and go digital? |

@carlosthedwarf - Great comment! :)
@PunkKnuckles - Just go digital! Comics aren't worth anything anymore, so when you purchase print they just leave a carbon footprint and take up that much more room wherever you live. If you go digital, you can read more comics anywhere with a portable device. What's interesting is that I've been selling my personal collection of comics on the street this past week and will continue to do so for the rest of the summer (weekends on the corner of Crosby and Spring in NYC). I sell them all for $1 a piece and trades half off. I have lots from the past 4 years, but a lot of 80's and some 70's and 90's Marvel and DC. So many more people pick up comics because of the price than people realize. I have little kids wanting to buy issues and parents who are doing so for their kids. I've even heard the parents stating how if comics were more affordable they would get them for their kids, but the price point is just too damn high. I've had quite a few people from overseas who have a hard time getting issues in general and download whatever they can online to read. When I hear how everyone says that "kids don't read comics anymore" it's a load of bull! Kids can't AFFORD comics anymore! DC's digital plan is finally a step in the right direction! |

Interestingly Lastchance I was just having that same conversation with a friend. Only adults can afford comics that cost what books cost when I was a boy. High quality paper, higher artist pay, computers, graphics, colouring, super inks, and an inflated sense of self worth have pushed comics out of the hands of kids, and only the children of current comic collectors are getting their hands on any at all. Comics need to move to a newspaper format where the costs are carried by the advertisers, and the books are virtualy costless. Take one of your titles DC/Marvel print it on lowgrade recycled newspapaer and insert it into your local paper (weekly/montly w/e) at no additional cost and see how many kids are collecting it after that, heck you don't even have to make it anything new, take one of your old titles that originally ran on this type of paper (so art transfers properly ...IDK how many of you remember how bad some artists transitioned to Baxter or High gloss paper when it was new) and you have no new art/writing cost...only absorb low quality printing and distribution costs (which a newpaper might be willing to absorb if they thought it would help stem the tide of their falling subscriptions). But what do I know...? Except that DC just doubled my subscriptions because I get Aquaman back yay (now if Wonder Woman can actualy become ...interesting/readable/not boring again). |

As a journalist (at least by profession, although I currently work casually as a newspaper sub-editor in addition to my full time job), I'm quite interested in the way printed media is changing and how big media providers MUST change to keep up. The digital genie is out of the bottle and providers have to listen to what consumers want and innovate to bring them new and interesting things - in new and interesting ways ... or risk becoming completely irrelevant. Part of me wishes this wasn't so, since I'm quite invested (emotionally more than financially) in the "old ways". I like hard copy comics. I like newspapers. But as a media creator myself, I have to be ready to embrace these changes. And as a consumer I'm excited by some things on the horizon. But quality is the main thing I'm looking for. I'll read rebooted/relaunched comics if they are good. If they are just gimmicky, they will lose me and eventually will lose my trust ... like UDE did. : \ Personally, I'd like it if hard copy comics came with a free digital copy ... I'd really like to enjoy digital comics, but I still struggle with the idea of value as it pertains to "non-real" comics. Hahaha. |

What's with Loeb? The DC stuff was great (Long Halloween, Supes for all Seasons) but his Marvel stuff is total garbage (Hulk, Ultimatum). |

you answered your own question sir, his DC stuff is 10+ years old. His marvel stuff of the past 6 years though has been awful. If Digital comics were .99 cents to download, i would buy then instead of torrent them to read. I just like to read the stories, and buy trades of things i like. I dont have the room to hold single issues anymore. |

I wish it was just bad, Wonder Woman has been faltering for a while and the newest revival attempt is so poorly written it is difficult to read through. W/E on the costume, but I need a story I care about to read. I here because I love the character, but if I want to be bored I can do that for less than...Drawing the Line at $2.99. I'm becoming more accepting of digital media, but I still fear for each and every PDF I purchase. I can't store it in enough places not to be concerned that it will one day just disapear. I've lost a lot of writting on old PC's that just died and while having a flast drive always in my pocket has helped, well one too many times through the washingmachine and I may have just washed that money I spent away. How do you (and how many places) store your digital media? |
