This movie was ALMOST great, but there were some key faults that stopped it from living up to its potential. There was a lot to like about it, but it's foundation was undercut by some uneven writing, which turns it from a fantastic movie to laughable at some points. I'd still recommend it, but with reservations.

Shaw's plan makes little to no sense. Blow up the world so that mutants can inherit it? They're not cockroaches. They would get fried or die of exposure like anyone else.
There were a few allusions to the notion that the "nuclear age" of the '60s time period, and thus presumably the increased exposure of radioactive materials, were somewhat responsible for more mutants being around than had been previously (they even worked "Children of the Atom" into some of Shaw's dialogue). So I think Shaw's idea was that the radioactive fallout after a nuclear war would foster a higher incidence of mutation in the survivors, leading to the rise of a mutant race from the ashes of human civilization.

To be fair, some of the non-comic-book speculative fiction around that time definitely proposed the idea of a world populated by mutants (usually grotesque savages, but mutant humans nonetheless) in the wake of nuclear armageddon. So it was certainly the sort of thing that might seem plausible for a nearly-invulnerable/immortal evil mastermind planning on recreating the world with his own "master race".

Seriously, you'll get a headache trying to keep up with the canon of superhero comics. Heck, DC made a mockery of it with the universe concepts; so many characters basically having too many back stories etc. the mutants are no different, in fact they are worse than most.

As a standalone, it was amazing, better than Thor, Iron Man 1, and all of the other Marvel series (and all DC except rebooted Batman). So don't think too hard, relax and enjoy... if you worry about trying to piece together timelines you won't be a comic fan for long :).

After reading all the posts I am looking forward to seeing this movie. The only thing I hope for if they do another movie is to see Gambit again(a bigger part to [grin] ).

I don't expect Hollywood to get the time line of the comics right like others said they are trying to appeal to non-comic book people, and hey at least it is not a remake of a 60's movie with the word new slapped on it.

Saw it with the family Saturday morning. The whole crew absolutely loved it.

For me, it was great seeing an original Hank McCoy before he turned into the furry blue one.

That original character was the character I fell in love with as a little boy.

I really enjoyed the story, and felt is was much deeper than most of the super hero movies that come out. (Even though I enjoyed those too) This for me and mine was the best superhero movie we have seen. My wife was very moved by Magneto's character and his story, to the point of tears at times.

It was such a kick hearing my kids excited whispers when names they recognize from VS and from my comics showed up. "McTaggart? You know who that is? Alex Summers? We have his card!" - Lots of fun for me.

I really enjoyed the 60s period of the film and story (and music), and would have preferred this to be the first X Men movie they made.

And I find it humorous when people complain about continuity errors in comic book movies, when comic book companies have pretty much destroyed all continuity in comics over the last 15 years.

Just some Beastly Brainwaves, but I give it 4 thumbs up!

I haven't seen it, and will likely wait for the DVD.

Honestly I know they don't write the movies for me, but then WTF, if non comic fans don't know they won't be pissed off if they don't change things they don't know about, so only by changing things can they piss people off, the people who do know.

I'll never understand destroying a good story to "make it more palitable to the masses" because it has traditionally made for a worse story than the one they had right in front of them all story boarded out and ready to go.

Thor was good but not great. I have high hope for Green Lanter though.
