So, I saw the flick today, and....

I was fairly dissapointed. I wanted to like this one. Some parts of it, I did, but overall it was underwhelming for sure. But let's break it down.

What's good? At times the CGI was pretty impressive. I liked how Oa and the Corps looked especially. Sinestro and Killowag came alive for me, though it was a tragedy that we saw so little of them. (More on that soon.) The action was pretty fast-paced and fun, and I did get a few chuckles out of it. Also, I appreciated the Amanda Waller cameo. That was an unexpected little treat!

What's bad? Well, firstly the casting was all wrong. If you've ever picked up a DC comic book you probably agree that Reynolds was not the right choice for Hal. Also, I've talked to fans and non-fans alike and we all agree that Hector Hammond was one of the dumbest looking and sounding villains ever put to screen. It seemed like half of his dialogue consisted of annoying girly screams. He was far from threatening. A lot of what I thought to be the interesting stuff (The origin of the Corps, the bond between Hal and Sinestro) was shoved aside for the scenes on Earth, which were rather pointless if you ask me.

So what went wrong here? I think pretty much everyone already knows: The movie lacked focus. And not in the Spidey 3 kind of way where they just try to shove in too many villains and it gets crowded, but in the way that they threw in characters and plot points that were entirely pointless. What was the point of Tom? He didn't do anything. Why did we need to see Hal's brothers if we didn't get anything out of them more than a line or two of dialogue each? If you ask me, the film would have benefitted a lot more from cutting Hector, Tom and some other fat, and replacing it with more development for Sinestro, and more time on Oa for Hal. And as a few have mentioned, it was riddled with plot holes.

So, yeah. It wasn't great, but then again it wasn't awful either. Final say?
5/10. Average. Nothing more, nothing less.

Oh, and here's my list, Scott.

Great
X-Men: First Class
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Spidey 2
Sin City
Iron Man 1
Scott Pilgrim VS The World
Watchmen (Director's Cut)
X1
X2
Hellboy II

Good
Hulk 2
Kick-Ass
Superman 1
Superman 2 (Donner Cut)
Batman
Hellboy
X3
300
Punisher
Spidey 1
Thor

The Negative Zone (Indifferent)
Green Lantern <-------------------
Fantastic Four
F4: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Iron Man II
Daredevil (Director's Cut)

Bad
Constantine
Batman Returns
Hulk 1
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Superman Returns
Blade 1
Blade 2
Blade 3
Losers

Ugly
Batman Forever
Batman and Robin
Jonah Hex
Howard the Duck
Spidey 3
Punisher: War Zone
Ghost Rider
Superman 3
Superman 4
Steel
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Elektra

I threw in a few that you forgot, cut V for Vendetta since I've never seen it, and added another category in the middle. These movies, I am indifferent to. The good and bad more or less cancel one another.

But if I must stay within the categories you provided, Green Lantern would probably be filed under Bad, albeit just barely.

Saw it today and definitely enjoyed it. I thought from beginning to end it was well paced. Hector Hammond was a little lame but a good plot filler until Parallax gets there. I was surprised at how much I ended up enjoying Ryan Rynolds Hal Jordan. My only dislike (and I kid you not, it was really the only thing I didn't like) the after credit feature. I don't like how it was just thrown in there with no lead up or point. It felt out of place although it looked AWESOME.

In the end I wanted a action packed, fun filled, enjoyable movie and that is what I got:).

By the way I liked the slight use of constructs. He was learning so I didn't expect him to be making them left and right. HOWEVER, in the sequel I expect to see tons of them;).
later,
Kj

Spider-Man 3 is the second worst comic book movie in the last 15 years. Hands down. Superman Returns only tops it. So with that knowledge of my taste if GL comes anywhere close to Spider-Man 3 I will leave an hour into it.
Man I can't wait to see this tomorrow,
Kj
Catwoman, Steel, Elektra and Ghostrider ... all definitely worse, in my opinion (I haven't seen Jonah Hex).

I rate X3 pretty lowly too, along with the Fantastic Four movies.

I'm not 100 per cent sure where I'd rank S3 and SR in the crappy list, but I don't think they'd be at the very bottom.

Edit - Just realised that Batman and Robin (1997) qualifies for last 15 years too. Ick.

Yeah, the movies weren't in any order. They were just thrown into categories for a frame of reference.

There is no such thing as a bad superhero movie. [clown]

GL was okay... Iron Man 1 is still one of the better ones to me in the last 5 years.

Is Kung Fu Panda a superhero?

I just saw it tonight. It's not as bad as all the reviewers are making it out to be. I believe we've been a little spoiled with downright fantastic superhero movies like Iron Man and Dark Knight. If Green Lantern came out in 2001 we'd all be drooling that DC had made a pretty good, faithful comic book adaptation of this material. It's literally from the keyboard of Geoff Johns to the big screen.

That said, the movie doesn't do anything wrong, but it doesn't really do a lot of things great either.

The character development is flat after the first act because they rushed to introduce a lot of material. Blake Lively is great eye candy but wooden in her delivery (not as terrible as Katie Holmes in Batman Begins or Kate Bosworth in Superman Returns though. Why is WB so bad at casting female leads in their superhero movies?)

Being a disembodied head floating through CGI for much of the film, a lot hinges on whether you like Ryan Reynolds or not, cuz let's be clear, this is not Hal Jordan-as-Green-Lantern it's Ryan-Reynolds-as-Tony-Stark-as-Hal-Jordan-as-Green-Lantern you are watching here. I happen to like Reynolds' comedic timing, which carries the movie through some admittedly ridiculous events.

All in all it will do well enough to get a sequel. If it does really good, watch for a Bradley Cooper/Leighton Meester announcement for The Flash any day now [grin]

I'm shocked, SHOCKED at how high people here rate Daredevil even IF it is the director's cut! That movie was SOOOO bad I don't really remember ANYTHING good about it! Can the director's cut be THAT much better???

I agreed with Punkknuckles on pretty much everything. There was NO point to Tom or the brothers, but the film could have left them in and just added 15 minutes in certain places to help flesh some stuff out. I said it elsewhere that I thought this film really lacked heart and tried to make us believe it had it. Ryan Reynolds does NOT make the audience sympathize with his portrayal of characters because he's too much bluster. I like him, but not as the main role in most things. He was definitely miss cast in this film.

I could have almost given it a B if Ryan was playing Kyle Raynor and they tweeked the story for his origin. It would have atleast felt a bit "less forced" so I give it a C for effort.

Here's something that will really shock you then lastchance. I actually like and not only that but actually enjoyed the following movies -

Fantastic Four
Fantastic Four 2
Daredevil

and drum roll for the last one because I actually LOVE the following movie -

Punisher (Tom Jane)

[grin] ,
Kj
P.S: Catwoman was so horrible I don't even rate it. If I had to it would obviously be worst than Superman and S3. But without including that I'll put Superman Returns and S3 at the top of my list. Those movies actually tried to be good and failed miserably. Catwoman didn't even try.

Shocked at Daredevil getting love here... I tried to watch it and tuned out of the movie within 20 minutes.

I secretly took a picture of KK as he was leaving the theater.
