I've been reading Vs System boards for a while now, but I haven't seen any decks featuring the Illuminati...neither do I see them in any tournaments! Are they really that bad? I've tried my hand at making one, but my lack of MUN keeps me from coming up with a deck I'm satisfied with (I'm ok with proxies but I don't really want to proxy commons and uncommons if I can avoid it) A friend of mine has one which used to feature the entire Illuminati, but after I pointed out that Pathetic Attempt stops the Infinity Gauntlet cold, he changed it to a 3 character build which seems to work better. So...anyone seen any good Illuminati decks out there? With their plot twist support, they seem that they should be a good team. |

I know Inkedlawyer ran an Illuminati build for a tournament that stalled until Doom on 8 for two attack steps, extremely brutal and very effective. NIt sure if it ran t The Infinity (plot twist) or not though. |

Pathetic Attempt was bad for the game. Just saying. |

I love Illuminati, but my local meta (three people, including me) won't let me play them. They're very powerful if you take the time to exhaustively learn their ins and outs. You really can't dabble in them. My thoughts on the Illuminati, from way back in the day: http://losthemisphere.com/blog/?p=616 http://losthemisphere.com/blog/?p=653 |

Actually, I know the card isn't a popular choice among players, but if anyone has an Illuminati list that is Golden Age, and revolves around Mr. Fantastic with A Child Named Valeria, I'd love to see it. I love decks involving ACNV and have been working on making a list for ACNV that uses the Illuminati as the kill, via gauntlet (either of them) or even just using them to help stall to something else. Any one have any ideas, or links to GA deck lists? |

Illuminati was a strong deck. I built one and if you hit properly it was pretty good. The deck definetly needed testing to learn and know when to get what. I will say that cards like Omnipotence and Pathetic Attempt fudged you. (2 cards I wish weren't legal in the game itself). Illuminati was good deck though, with a few different strong iterations that you could curve with. |

I sometimes get... what's that word? Pewnished by Captain Spud's Illuminati for bad behavior. To quote the potato: Either way, the odds of an Illuminati appearance are low. They tend to show up only to balance off the fun scales: if no fun was had at all in the previous game, then that same outcome will be inflicted on the opponent in the followup. Fortunately, this punitive measure is needed only very rarely. The lesson tends to stick quite nicely. And am I the only person who still quotes that gungan king? EDIT: Referring to the "pewnished" quote, not the potato quote. Too much quoting ftl! Edited by Eponymous, Jul 19 2011, 02:49 PM.

More often, the set-up itself takes the fun out of the casualness. |

I played against two Illuminati decks in the last offical UDE world's championship at Origins a few years ago. I was playing my JLA/GK money.dec. I won one and lost one (to OrangeSoda Man). Besides PA and Omni, the most dangerous card that can manhandle them is Wonder Woman (DCL) The game I lost is because I didn't hit my Batman 3 drop, so he was able to wipe out WW's ability on turn four. From then on it was downhill. But I do like both playing and playing against the Illuminati. My deck uses the 3 drop Iron Man from MEV to bring out an extra small drop Illuminati member, (usually Professor X, also from MEV) As a side note, in a Random Punks Tournament, I built an Illuminati deck featuring the characters from the MHG and MTU sets, that did okay. The focus was different, relying more on the version Illuminati and using their abilities to manipulate the top cards of the deck. |

That game was brutal. Losing because of missed character drops is rough. =========================== I've played three types of illuminati decks. The first (and probably strongest) is when you pair them with Sensational Spider-Man. T3 Clandestine Operations T4 Spider-Man T5 Iron Man is just really really tough for getting damage through. The second was the deck SteveE mentioned, since the format was modern age Spidey was out. This deck used the infinity gauntlet (whereas the SF/Illuminati deck doesn't), and most of the games were decided on whether I lived long enough to use it twice. The one thing I will say is sometimes choosing which mode for the gauntlet isn't always an easy choice. I like going for their hand sometimes, while most people generally just kill characters. The only noteworthy thing about this deck that was different from your typical illuminati deck is that I ran The Fallen One 9-drop from MCG. The synergy between Fallen One and Clandestine Operations/Gauntlet is great, even though normally I'd want something a little stronger from a 9-drop. The third type of illuminati deck I am familiar with was in response to the final 6 MEQ cards being previewed. Having a 2-drop Iron Man I thought would be huge. I've tried it in shells of SF/Illuminati and without Spider-Man. Having Dr. Strange's cloak and web shooters 2.0 seemed pretty good. I'd only expect this to do well when you can use the gems from MHG/MTU though. Spud played an illuminati mirror against me at BotB1 that was interesting - he had effects to break uniqueness and he ran the 4-drop Dr. Strange which I don't run, but it worked for him. His articles he linked 'prolly go over them. |

That was one of the best games of VS I've ever played. And 4-drop Strange is mostly there for control mirrors. He doesn't come out often, but I'm very glad to have him when he does. |

The modern list seems to be lost, I'll remake it. I'll work on it now. That was one of the coolest games I've ever played too Spud. |
