Hey everybody...here we go!

My day started at 7am when my 3-year old decided it would be fun to say "get up! Get up! Get up!" until...my wife and I got up. My buddy Nick had crashed in order to just leave straight to the store in the morning so at 9:15 we departed for the new location of All in One Games in Randolph.

An hour later we arrived at their AMAZING new location. My god I wish this store was just 30 minutes closer to my home! So much space, clean, and well kept...the perfect spot for some insane Super Crossover Sealed Action.

I think the best part of this format is cracking the packs. 10 players began the day by making fun of some of the TERRIBLE cards that had to be used. 6-drop Kaine from WOS? Yep he's fantastic in this format.

My deck had few if any Plot Twists though i did have nifty trick going with the DSM Mr Freeze & Join us or Die. After swiss finished we cut to Top 4 where I faced my buddy Angelo only to get him down to 1 on turn 6.

Frown.

He mangled me on 7 with initiative.

BYOS Constructed

So I decided months ago to find a decklist or build a deck that would serve three important purposes:

1. Be fun - for me
2. Be annoying - for my opponent
3. Not be broken - I hate broken

I went back and forth between Wrecking Crew, Magneto Legend, and DCL League and as I was scouring the site for some deck inspiration I came across THIS:

Wildworld - SpecialSauceReid

20 Wild Pack Recruits
4 Powell
2 The Dwarf
1 Shathra
1 Paladin
4 Mordred
1 Morlun
3 Mephisto
1 Noble Kale

4 Death's Embrace
4 In Limbo
4 Ritual Sacrifice
4 Poker Night
2 Dark Designs

4 Damocles Base

2 Ego Gem

It looks like a random pile but it's quite the bit of deckbuilding genius. Essentially you spam out the Recruits until turn 4 all the the while setting up your row with In Limbos and Ritual Sacrifice.

Damocles Base searches for recruits in the early turns and then your key drops turn 5 and on.

Once Mordred hits the board your recruits stay stunned. As per the MTU Faq: as long as you recover Mordred first, his effect keeps everyone nice and safe! Tricks like Poker Night keep the cards coming and the breakthrough low as you set up your end game turns 6-8.

Mephisto is a beast. 12/12 Flight and Range and he's concealed. In this format, concealed is king and his power suits this deck perfectly. Every time an opponent attacks I gain endurance equal to the number of stunned characters I control. On some attacks I actually gained life.

Against a deck with resource hate you keep the In Limbos face down. If not you flip them up and gain TONS of life.

The endgame is Noble Kale to the dome.

Part of the fun and success comes from the complete and utter surprise factor. Once the cat is out of the bag skillful players will find a way...

Round 1: Outsiders

As always I start the game taking a beating while I set up. I was able to Powell for 3 In Limbos and dropped Morlun on turn 5. By turn 7 I was gaining about 16 life per turn. Mephisto kept beating down on his smaller drops and ended it on 7.

Game 2 was a little different. Missing drops isn't the deck's weakness...missing In Limbo is. I scrambled digging through my deck and came across nothing. Fortunately my opponent was missing drops and once Mephisto hit the board I was able to stabilize. I eventually drew in Noble Kale and finished, but I was fortunate.

Round 2: Shadowpact

Shadowpact is a tricky matchup for 2 reasons: Transmutation and Shazam. The 7 drop essentially resets the game endurance wise and the Magic Pot Twist can screw with my In Limbos. Going into the game I knew I had to hold onto the Limbos for as long as I could and hope my opponent would make a key error. That error came in the form of Spectral Slaughter.

By stunning my board of 9 Recruits my Mephisto now became an incredible endurance engine. I cycled through my deck desperately looking for Noble Kale and once I did I quickly finished it.

Now that he knew what he was facing my tactics had to change as well. He wouldn't make the Spectral Slaughter mistake again so I knew I had to be tricky with my other cards. Poker Night was my ace in the hole and I hadn't played it yet against this opponent.

He immediately goes on the offensive: Conjuring June Moon with the full set of Fate Artifacts. He doesn't attack though! He just sits there passing. I can't start stunning my recruits into his guys to force the stun because he'll Transmutate my Limbos away. So we both pass and pass and pass.

We go into turn 7 and he drops the life-equaling wizard. Although I had not attacked a single time he was at 5 endurance and I was at 50. But that would quickly change. Shazam ties our endurance at 5 and he goes for a tactical kill and takes me to -11. I flip just 2 Limbos and gain enough to get back to 1 endurance!

We continue this dance for a few more turns while I look for Kale. Turn 8 he tries again...this time I Poker Night twice and draw. He removes Mordred from Continuity, but because of Mephisto he actually doesnt do much damage. I use 2 Ritual Sacrifices to get back to 1 endurance again.

Turn 9 finally brings me Kale so he knows he has to end me. He sends everyone and manages to get me down to -42 endurance. I would find out his frustration was the lack of Transmutation in his hand so when I flipped the other 2 In Limbos after attacking for 19 with Kale he knew he was done. 4 In Limbos and Morlun gained me 45 life and gave me the win.

Game 3: Flash Legend

Match report to come! Gotta go to work!

FROWN cant go to Mega Weekend Day 2. This totally sucks, I just got the call about 20 minutes ago.

AllinOne: I just got home from work and saw this. Sadly, none of them drive, I got home from last night at around 1AM after driving all over dropping them off.

I really apologize. I had requested this weekend off months ago, but the owner of the company wanted someone there today and Im the least tenured guy.

No worries, Joe!

Here's my Day One Report:

I didn't play in the Super Crossover Sealed Event Since I was working and running the event. I did play in the evening BYOS Event. I went 1-2 and my DCL Deck got stomped on pretty badly. In Round Two I lost both games by an average of 50 points!

Day 1: BYOS
SHIELD BURN (Tied for 3rd)

Decklist
18 – Agent of SHIELD
4 – Squirrel Girl
4 – Speedball<>Penance
4 – Wolverine, Agent of SHIELD
3 – Nick Fury, Director of SHIELD
4 – Spiderman, Unmasked
4 –Ares, Mighty Avenger

4 – SHIELD Helicarrier
3 – Torture Chamber
4 – She-Hulk Smash
4 – No Retreat No Surrender
4 – Invasion Plans

Not very innovative, obviously. I chose SHIELD burn because my playtesting showed that it had the punch to burn out popular meta choices like Warbound or Checkmate/VU before they could really get their stuff up and running. The one thing I didn’t count on was getting outburned…

Round 1: vs At Their Finest
I won the first game with very little resistance. While At Their Finest can STOMP curve decks, burn is a terrible match up problem for it. The second game was a bit closer, as different cards that prevented characters from attacking stopped Wolverine in his tracks. Closer, but I still won out, going 2-0 against this opponent.

Round 2: vs Flash Legend
Though we drove 2.5 hours to get to the Mega-Weekend, my second match was against one of my traveling companions and his Flash Legends deck. The bottom line is he had Firehawk in his deck (Activate -> Target opponent loses 1 endurance for each character he controls). Needless to say I went 0-2. This entire round took about 10 minutes.

Round 3: vs Negative Zone
Coincidentally, my last Swiss round was against my other friend that we travelled with. We had tested this matchup many times, so we kind of knew how it would end up. The first game was OUTRAGEOUS as he only recruited starting in the fourth round. The second game was closer, but Ares finished things up, finishing the round in 2 games.

SWISS RECORD: 2-1

Somehow I managed to make top 4 (the gods of tournament software smiled on me, as there were two other players who went 2-1, with 2 players going 3-0).

Playoff 1: vs Warbound
This was the matchup I had been fearing. I did a lot of testing against it, so I kind of knew what to expect, but I also knew that the Hulk could take down entire SHIELD armies.

Game 1
These games went really quickly, so I don’t remember a lot of details. I remember not hitting Ares though, which hurt. The only positive thing about this game for me was that I recruited no characters with an attack high enough to stun Hiroim, so the Hulk was left without invulnerability. I just didn’t have quite enough punch to bring down the Hulk, however and lost the first game

Game 2
This one was a nailbiter. I hit a little bit better this time. In round six, I was able to stun a very large 6 drop Hulk, and at directly with Wolverine (with SHIELD Hellicarrier flipped) with 2 She-Hulk smashes giving another +8 ATK, for a total of 16, which left my opponent with 1 endurance remaining. Luckily, I have a Torture Chamber and was able to burn him for the last 2 endurance I needed to prevent a certain loss in the 7th round.

Game 3
Another very close game. Again, I don’t remember all the details, but I believe the score was something along the lines of 5 to 7 going into the 8th round. Obviously, he recruited Hulk, Worldbreaker and got the win, but I was very close to burning him out just in time. (I’m pretty sure Speedball’s effect was responsible for upwards of 30 burn that game due to some creative build phases on my part).

While I was disappointed, I have to give it up to my opponent for piloting Warbound in a very expert fashion, as it can be easy to make a mistake playing against this SHIELD deck. He’s a great player and he deserved the win!
