Hello! I want to create a new and improved Heralds of Galactus deck. I have learned a few things from deck construction in Magic and L5R and a few other things since then. For one thing, I know I want to stick to the bare minimum 60 cards. For another, the strat I want to go with is getting out Galactus, so all stall and defense and negation, with Pathetic Attempt, Omnipotence, This Bores Me! and Ultimate Nullifier to shut down things that will disrupt my plan.

Here is some of what I have to work with, and I'm going to renew my old trade thread to see if I can't trade for what else I'll need:

Characters
1
2x Frankie Raye, Optimistic Youth
4x The Punishers, Army
2
2x Silver Surfer, Skyrider of the Spaceways
2x Destroyer, Soulless Juggernaut
3
1x Air-Walker, Gabriel Lan
1x Firelord, Pyreus Kril
2x Frankie Raye, Soul Searcher
2x Plasma, Replacement Herald
4
2x Stardust, Merciless Warrior
1x Morg, Corrupt Destroyer
3x Human Torch, The Invisible Man
5
2x Frankie Raye, Harbinger of Death
2x Silver Surfer, Righteous Protector
1x Air-Walker, Harbinger of Despair
1x Red Shift, Rift Walker
6
1x Terrax, Harbinger of Ruin
2x Firelord, Harbinger of Havoc
2x Destroyer, Harbinger of Devastation
1x The Fallen One, The Forgotten
7
2x Silver Surfer, Last Zenn-Lavian
2x Silver Surfer, Harbinger of Oblivion
2x Galactus, the Maker
1x Morg, Harbinger of Extinction
8
2x Tyrant, The Original Herald
9
4x Galactus, Devourer of Worlds
11
2x Silver Surfer, Herald

Locations
1x Ego, The Living Planet
1x Elemental Converters
1x Worldeater Apparatus
1x Worldship
1x Taa II

Equipment
3x Silver Surfer's Board
2x Ultimate Nullifier

Plot Twists
I'm not listing every plot twist I have, here, just the ones that are relevant that have been in use recently.

1x Omnipotence
2x I Hunger
3x Cosmic Necessity
2x Kindred Spirits
2x Cannibal Tech
1x He Who Watches
1x Creation of a Herald
3x Elemental Battle
1x Pacification
1x Siphon Energy
1x Absorba Shield
4x Pleasant Distraction
1x The Uni-Power
1x Cover Fire
1x The Power Cosmic Unleashed
1x Messiah Complex
3x Relentless Onslaught

Now, I know some of these things are less useful than others. The reason I put Relentless Onslaught in there at all the last few times I played was because I liked getting to draw a card when I attacked down the curve. It shouldn't really be necessary with a new focus, though.

I think I can safely bet, at minimum, that I will need two more Silver Surfer, Last Zenn-Lavians, 3 more Omnipotences to help shut down things that can shut me down, Pathetic Attempt would be great and I think This Bores Me is the one that I want that has a similar power. Another Elemental Battle will be nice and I need 3 more Cover Fires, because we know that the enemy will be gunning for me with a vengeance. They're going to know my strategy, which is to turtle until I can bring out Galactus.

So I need to be able to defend and heal so I can stall, and also a way to defeat things that can shut me down. A way to deal with that damn Invisible Woman 6-drop that totally stops the Devourer of Worlds' power would be nice, too, but that's pretty situational. I know if I get Gamma Bomb, I can at least potentially wipe the board, but there are things to worry about: The plot twist that the Knights use that switches endurance totals, Zero Hour, plus things like Omnipotence and PA on my Bomb.

Anyway, I am wide open to suggestions here. You guys know Heralds. You know what I want to do. How can we best make it happen? How can I be rockin' Trivium while Galactus descends upon my foe's world and crushes it into dust?

Deck Theme: Down From the Sky

Finally, slightly off-topic, but while we're here: Did anyone else ever read the unthinkably epic clash between Galactus and Mephisto?

Is this a former deck or just the cards you have access to?

As far as characters go, Frankie Raye 1 drop is banned. Unless your hobby league agrees to you using it, I'd go with 4 x Galan because you get some endurance out of it. Your primary two drop should be the Silver Surfer. It is very important to this deck as it can get you cards you need, especially if you can get a board on him. Your main three drop should be Air-Walker. On four Human Torch is key. Five drop is personal choice. I prefer Red Shift, but I can see using others as well. On six I go with The Fallen One, because he can get cosmic counters if you need them. On seven I use the following: 2 x Silver Surfer from MEX and 2 x Galactus. I use the two Galactus for discarding and for the plot twist and other effects that require you either discard him or reveal him. I don't need an eight drop because Silver Surfer can bring Galactus out by then. I also include 2 x Galactus nine drop. Again, its good to have him for discarding and revealing.

The only equipment I have in my deck is the Silver Surfer's Board. Ultimate Nullifer is good if you have room.

The only location you need is 4 x Elemental Converters. This card works so well with Silver Surfer 2 drop and Kindred Spirits. Also there is a theme of discarding cards with cost four or higher, so having four of them doesn't hurt. Plus it has terraform. I have seen decks, however that have Cosmic Tuning Fork from the DLS set and if you have room you might want to include it.

Unless your hobby league is Pathetic Attempt/Omnipotence crazy, I'd delete them. Same for the other MCG plot twists. I just don't have the room for them. Good call on Cover Fire. For my search I rely on Kindred Spirits and Creation of a Herald and Silver Surfer two drop. For stall, 4 x I Must Obey is manditory. I then fill out the remainer space iwth combat pumps and defense pumps. If you can get them, use 4 x Chilly Reception from DWF.

I love playing this deck so good luck!

This is just what I have access to, at the moment. I'm trying to trade/buy what else I need.

The Frankie Raye I'm not so much worried about, largely because I think she was banned for a broken combo with another card I'll never run. But none of my opponents run 1-drops, so I probably won't, either. Frees up some room for good stuff down the line.

So, you think I should ditch the two Destroyer 2-drops and just run 4 of Skyrider? I need to get two more of him, really. I need more of the Fallen One, and I want more of those Last Zenn-Lavians, that's for sure.

I don't know if I'll have room, but I'll see. I want one more Board, so I can make absolutely sure to get it going.

Four Converters, huh? Well, I could certainly try that! If I could get two or three out, it'd be great to draw two or three extra cards every turn! I like the Worldeater Apparatus because I like gaining the endurance if a guy is going to get stunned, anyway, but I can see the appeal for more Converters. I'll need to get more.

They are, believe me. Everyone runs some Omnis, everyone runs This Bores Me or Neutralize or something, Pathetic Attempt. I'll need them to stay competitive, plus, since I will be putting myself wholly into summoning Galactus for the win, I need to be able to shut down things that would stop that from happening.

I'm gonna try to get I Must Obey, more defense pumps (Siphon Energy wouldn't be bad, either, to Siphon useful plot twists), and Chilly Reception looks great.

Thanks for the tips!

That's on my list, too. It would be really killer with the other search stuff I have. We wants it, gollum.

If you want a more aggressive take on this deck you can play to Morg on 4 with Surfer 2 and his board Morg begins clearing the field immediatly.

That's an interesting idea. I was pretty much thinking pure defensive strategy with this one. Morg getting rid of guys could be helpful, though.

You mentioned that you'd like to have two or more converters. You are aware that locations are unique aren't you? (Unless it says somewhere on the card that its non-unique.) So if you have more than one faceup, you'll have to KO them until just one is showing.

As for PA and Omni, I have found that if you fill your deck with these, they just get in the way. They don't come out until four or five. Don't get me wrong, they are great cards. In a tournament, I was able to negate Galactus 9 drop effect using PA. And I was playing against him with an insanity deck! Its been awhile since I read Omni's text but it doesn't prevent you from playing characters, just named plot twists. In this deck, I have found that I need defense pumps more than anything. So I include 4 each of Acrobatic Dodge and Against All Odds

And a bump after some time, as I'm filling out an order to finish off the Heralds and get them in tip-top shape. I want the deck complete, and I'm gonna throw it in some silver Dragon Shields, too. Seems appropriate. [grin]

So I was wondering if you (or anyone) had some input as far as the decklist goes. Mainly, I'm wondering what kinds of numbers to do for each level of character and number of plot twists, etc. How many of each ingredient to add to the recipe. Some of the cards are somewhat expensive, so I want to buy as many as I'll need but not go overboard, and want to make sure I have enough of what I need.

This deck is going to stall out until Galactus comes out, and I might put in a Gamma Bomb for a desperation tactic if I need to sweep the board before bringing out Big G on 9.

Do you maybe have a list of what you are thinking of sofar? What cards are you thinking of using and buying? Would be easier to give feedback if we see what you got going on :)

Gamma Bomb is only during the combat phase. Galactus should be more than enough to handle things.

I was thinking Gamma Bomb on 9, in the rare case they have something out that would stop Galactus. I could sweep the board on 8 (with the Last Zenn-Lavian out) and then bring out Galactus on 9. Hopefully, that would overwhelm whatever they could bring out on nine.

As far as the what I'm going to run so far, here's what I planned to run. I'm wondering how many of each thing I'll need to buy, so I'll list how many of each I have, too.

Characters
2
Silver Surfer, Skyrider of the Spaceways x2
3
Air-Walker, Gabriel Lan x1
4
Human Torch, the Invisible Man x3
5
Red Shift, Rift Walker
6
The Fallen One, The Forgotten x1
Destroyer, Harbinger of Devastation x2
Firelord, Harbinger of Havoc x2
7
Silver Surfer, Last Zenn-Lavian x2
Galactus, the Maker x2
9
Galactus, Devourer of Worlds x4

Equipment
Silver Surfer's Board x3
Ultimate Nullifier x2

Locations
Elemental Converters x1
Worldeater Apparatus x1

Plot Twists
Cover Fire x1
Pleasant Distraction x4
Kindred Spirits x2
Elemental Battle x3
Creation of a Herald x1
Cosmic Necessity x3
I Hunger x2
Pacification x1
Revitalize x3
Messiah Complex x1
1x Omnipotence
1x Siphon Energy

Now, I plan to get more Skyriders, since he'll be very key. For my 3-drop, I want Air-Walker, since he's good at tying up enemies. Human Torch is incredibly useful for a 4 (imagine that!), while I like Red Shift as a 5 because if I have initiative, or he survives until I get to attack, he can tie up their strongest attacker. On 6, I do like the Fallen One, because cosmic counters = good, though I have a soft spot for the Destroyer because he can be pretty strong. On 7, I am wondering if I should run at least 3 Last Zenn-Lavians, though I will have the ability to search for a lot of them. The thing is, I know Last Zenn-Lavian will be a target, so I'll need to get him Boarded, hidden and use everything I've got to protect him. I'd definitely like at least one more Pacification, since it's a very useful card.

Of course, Cover Fire will be a necessity, since it's pretty useful in a deck in which everyone has range.

As far as new stuff I was looking at getting, here is a list:

Alias Investigations
I Must Obey
Pathetic Attempt
Construction Site
Ultimate Nullifier, One-Way Trip
This Bores Me (maybe)
Gamma Bomb (maybe)

My problem is that I'm quite accustomed to deck building in Magic, but not this, so I'm not quite sure what a good general ratio of characters to non-characters is, and how many of each I want to run. That's hopefully where you guys come in! The Silver Surfer is my favorite hero and I love the Marvel cosmic stuff. Hopefully we'll be able to get this ready to face even the likes of Brotherhood or Darkseid or X-Factor.

I think I would take something of a turn like this with a mono Heralds deck, mind it's a rough draw though with just my idea's :)

Characters (30)
2
4 Silver Surfer, Skyrider of the Spaceways
4 Puppet Master
3
4 Air-Walker, Gabriel Lan
2 Frankie Raye
4
4 Human Torch, the Invisible Man
2 other 4 drop Terrax?
5
2 Frankie Raye?
1 Red Shift, Rift Walker
6
1 Terrax (big fan of this guy personally)
1 The Fallen One, The Forgotten
1 Destroyer, Harbinger of Devastation
7
2 Silver Surfer, Last Zenn-Lavian
9
2 Galactus, Devourer of Worlds

Equipment (4)
4 Silver Surfer's Board

Locations (7)
3 Elemental Converters
2 Soul World
1 Slaughter Swamp
1 Avalon Spacestation

Plot Twists (19)
4 Creation of a Herald
4 Kindred Spirits
4 Cover Fire
2 Have a blast/DotD
2 Pathetic attempt
3 Omnipotence

Heralds really have a weak spot in stall mechanics/lack in choices on 4 and 5 imo specially 5 theres not really a drop that is on theme, but frankie is a nice draw engine i guess, Air walker would be nice too, but 3 drop is hopefully arround at 5 still.
Maybe you can do with less silver surfer boards and the numbers might be tweeked to what you like.
Also Ultimate nullifier seems like such a cool card, but never played with it so no idea how it actually is.. fun to try i guess.

Hope this is of some use to you :D

Thanks for all the suggestions! Here is what I have so far, though I'm still trying out different lists, largely on the plot twist side. I might put in a Slaughter Swamp or its equivalent, but I'm not sure what to take out. Maybe one each of Last Zenn-Lavian and World Devourer? I'm considering putting in Elemental Battle, too, just not sure if it's needed. I also have both flavors of Ultimate Nullifier, which is useful, I'm just not sure if it deserves a spot. Space is at a premium.

This thing has been a cosmic powerhouse in the games I've played. I've run roughshod over all my opponents, who can't stop me before Galactus comes out. Largely, I get out the Silver Surfer 2-drop on 2, get the Board on him and get him hidden, use Cover Fire and Pathetic Attempt to keep him protected, and Human Torch to reduce the damage I take. Air-Walker helps tie up enemies, Terrax can dispose of pesky lower-drops, and Nova helps me draw cards. Red Shift can attack and bounce out with pesky characters and cost them any +1/+1 counters or equipment. Galactus, of course, wins me the game, but also lets me use some of my plot twists more effectively.

Between Skyrider of the Spaceways, Elemental Converters, Alias Investigations and Creation of a Herald, I pretty much set myself up to get everything I need on every turn. It's very difficult to slow that down. As a last resort, or on turn 8, I use Gamma Bomb to clear the board after bringing out Galactus, denying my opponents any chance to eke out the win. Worst-case scenario, I can Gamma Bomb the board on 8 if Galactus' power is prevented, and then try again on 9.

Characters
2
4x Silver Surfer, Skyrider of the Spaceways
3
4x Air-Walker, Gabriel Lan
2x Frankie Raye, Soul Searcher
4
4x Human Torch, The Invisible Man
1x Terrax, The Tamer
1x Stardust, Merciless Warrior
5
2x Frankie Raye, Harbinger of Death
1x Red Shift, Rift Walker
6
2x Terrax, Harbinger of Ruin
1x The Fallen One, The Forgotten
7
4x Silver Surfer, Last Zenn-Lavian
9
4x Galactus, Devourer of Worlds

Plot Twists
4x Cover Fire
4x Pathetic Attempt
4x Creation of a Herald
4x Kindred Spirits
2x Death of the Dream
2x I Must Obey
1x Omnipotence
1x Gamma Bomb

Locations
2x Elemental Converters
1x Soul World
1x Worldeater Apparatus
1x Alias Investigations
1x Construction Site

Equipment
3x Silver Surfer's Board

So what do you guys think? Any suggestions for some tweaks (though this is very powerful in play so far!)?
