Some quick newbie questions

Hi all sorry if this is the wrong forum. I am new to the game and am still a bit confused to some of the rules. Unfortunately I know nobody IRL who plays it so I cannot learn from them. I've been through the tutorials and also snagged the comp rules but again because I have nobody to go to, some basics still confuse and elude me. Maybe I am a bit slow, idk.

I was hoping there was some kind of voice chatroom where I could just badger a pro with all my questions in rapid succession and have a dialogue maybe even a do a quick mock game, but alas I am a bit late to VS system and much of its support has faded from the web.

Does anyone know of such a place where I could verbally chat to some players for a bit or am I out of luck?

Might be able to find someone who would voice chat with you while playing on OCTGN.

If you can't find someone to talk to directly, I'm sure if you come up with a list of questions and post them, people will try to answer them. We may not be the most active, but everyone here is in it for the love of the game, at this point.

Though, one option could be to track down 'Marvel Trading Card Game', which got a release on DS, PSP and PC (Assuming you've got one of them, of course). It's only got a limited card set and isn't 100% on the rules, but it's mostly right, and since it's all done automatically, you can't really do things wrong. If you're not sure about basic stuff, it could help you to learn it (This is actually how I learned to play, and have a pretty good idea of how the game works because of it.)

That game is indeed awesome, if you are one of the lucky countries where it didn't get released you can ofc just download some torrent from some site, like I did. Enjoyed the game allot.
The AI is little stupid at points and there's a lack of strong decks to play against. But the basics are really good.
I remember that there was some option in the menu where it let allot of substebs and response option "fly" wich I found highly annoying, because it took away allot of use of some cards >.< When that "filter" is turned off you are ready for allot of clicking/skipping because EVERYTHING gives you the option to respond, even if you can't.

Send you a PM SW339.

Thanks guys I didnt expect any replies! Actually Abyss, I did indeed track the Marvel TCG game down and am playing it now. This is exactly what I need. Although I am a little bummed that the resolution/graphics seem to be for the PSP and it insists on running in window mode. It distorts the card pics a bit but again it is probably a port from handheld devices. Regardless, this will do the trick to let me see games in motion at my own pace. Thanks for the suggestion!

Is OCTGN better for computer play?

Btw, what do cards with red text code indicate? I notice some cards I have are neither white, blue or gold but red text on their card code.

Red are promo cards-- usually released with action figures, or in comic books.

No. Unless it was Gallery Packs.

Not sure what they are. But is the red as rare as gold or more?

The red copies themselves are, but they are also often just red copies of common cards. So the red copy may be hard to get but a regular copy may be easy to get.

Extended arts are also "red". You could obtain them in multiple ways mostly involving hobby league or attending tournaments.
Hearing you opened them in packs I assume Kariggi is right and you had a couple of Gallery packs (and the cards are extended art or stacker/slider).
Prices/rarity vary allot on those :)
Like Kariggi stated they are mostly the full (extended) art versions of original cards. Pretty cool to have!

The other thing I dont quite understand is creating a deck. The rulebooks say very little on this other than (iirc) you have to have at least 60 cards.

Are there any hard and fast rules for this or is a case of do what you want? Like, how many plot twists should I have? How many characters? What about mixing from different expansions? Do I stick to one team only? If so, can I include plot twists and equipment from other expansions? Some Plot Twists work, while others call for specific cards/sets/affiliations that I would not have if I am using a team from a different expansion. One PT that I have asks me to dispose of an infinity gem. I am certainly out of luck with that because I have no infinity gem cards as of yet.

And what if I have some cards from Heralds of Galactus but not enough to fill out a deck, do I just not use those cards or can I throw them into my existing deck, mixing them with say, Spider friends or something?

You can do whatever you want and feel most comfortable with in making a deck. The rules for all decks are 60cards minimum and no more than 4 copies of any card (exeption on thos rule are "army" characters).
Ofc there are some calculations done on what the most ideal amount of characters or support in a deck is. Personally I would keep it about 50/50 on support/characters (keep it arround the 30cards each) for a basic deck.

Aditional rules to building a deck are the ages or themes you want to play.
The "ages" determine what sets you are allowed to play, but I personally wouldnt bother with that and just stick with golden age (all sets are legal).
For themes there are allot of different rules, like random punks (no rares allowed), bring your own set (pick a set and use only cards from that set), and many more.

But basicly the first 2 rules are what you should stick with (60cards and 4copies max). The rest you can mix all and anything!

Greetings

Thanks Dr. Strange (love him btw).

So what do you do when just playing with friends etc.? Do you try to stick with one team or do you mix some of your faves in regardless of affiliation? What about Plots Twists that cant be used due to you not having something it needs? You'd obviously want to leave them out, right?

Btw when you say "Support" you mean Plot Twists/equip/locations, right?
