So the question that I have is does "You May" mean you have to, or does "You May" simply produce an option that you can or cannot take? I know there are lots of cards out there that contain the phrase "You May", some are situational, but overall im just looking for some clarification. According to Vs. System TCG Comprehensive Rules version 2.7, (this set of rules may or may not be up to date this was the only 1 i had to reference.) May Modifiers whose text contains the word "may" have an optional portion. While resolving the effect that creates the modifier or processing the continuous power that generates it, the player chooses whether to do the optional portion or not. There is not a default for this choice, the player must choose one way or the other before he or she can finish processing this effect or power. A replacement modifier that contains "may" and "instead" creates an optional replacement cost; this has the normal "may" choice for the player with the added cost related restriction that you can't choose that choice unless you have the materials with which to pay available to you. (See rule 203.7a.) So from the above I gathered that "You May" is optional, my group of friends have told me that "You May" isn't optional and it means you have to. With cards that refer to paying endurance, such as the 2, and 6 drop Human Torch, I was merely looking for a definitive answer to clear up my confusion. 2 drop HT says: Whenever Human Torch attacks or is attacked, you may pay 4 endurance. If you do, he gets +4 ATK for this attack. 6 drop HT says: Recruit Human Torch only if you control a Fantastic Four character. Whenever Human Torch attacks or is attacked, you may pay 6 endurance. If you do, Human Torch gets +6 ATK and -6 DEF for this attack. |

"you may" are options, the conclusion you've drawn out of your research is correct. Wich makes your playgroup incorrect. For the human Torches you named this means that whenever they they become an "attacker" (attacks) or a "defender" (is attacked) their power triggers giving you the option to pay the endurance to continue the effect. -If you choose to do so, you pay the endurance and the effect of "if you do" goes off. -If you choose not to do so, you ofc pay no endurance and hence do not gain the effect after the "if you do" part. Extra note: to "pay endurance" you need to have the amount of endurance required to pay, you can't pay into negatives. hope it helps :) Also this is in "Decks and strategy" at the moment, for any future questions like these I would like to refer to the "Rules" part of the site (one section under this one :D) and post them there. To keep the board clean and make sure the "rule guru's" on here won't miss them :) |
