Hello everyone, I'm new to VS System and could use some help building my first deck. I'm going for a beatdown deck because I read those are best for beginners. Should I focus on one team/affiliation or would it be ok if I used 2? Also, I was thinking of using Avengers but I'm not too sure how Leader/Reservist works or which is best for a beginner. I'm very flexible on which team I should start with, so any tips would be nice! I have cards from MOR, MSM, MXM, MMK, MHG, and MAV. |

I can't help you on which deck to make since I'm a rookie myself. http://www.comicvine.com/vs-system/12-43647/ This should help you learn on what a reservist, leader, and whatever you want to know. |

Leader means that characters directly in front, behind and directly left or right to that character get the bonus stated after "Leader:". So lets take Iron Man, Tony Stark (from MAV) who reads "Leader: Avengers characters adjacent to Iron Man have flight and range and get +1 ATK / +1 DEF." Any avengers character you place next to him (or behind/infront) gets a nice boost, while next to him. Reservist is a keyword that basicly means that you can reveal those cards from your resource row during the recruit step and recruit them from the resource row (and opting to replace them with a card from your hand). So kinda "this is no dead card in your resource row, but an extention of your hand during the recruit step". If you have a little stock of MAV cards and like beatdown/reservist you can look at "Squadron no hand" or "Avengers reservist" decks. They are cheap to build, very easy to pilot and can lay a beatdown. Personally I like Avengers reservist better and they got some sweet updated cards in the MUN set, that you can look at and splash in the original MAV deck. Decklist for (MAV) Avengers Reservist: Characters: 4 Rick Jones, A Hero's Best Friend 4 Natasha Romanoff<>Black Widow, Super Spy 4 Dane Whitman<>Black Knight, Heroic Paladin 4 Black Panther, T'Challa 4 Quicksilver, Mutant Avenger 4 Doctor Druid, Anthony Druid (MXM) (or Carol Danvers<>Warbird, Galactic Adventurer) 4 Hawkeye, Clinton Barton 4 Sub-Mariner, Namor (MXM) (or more She-Hulk's and Hercules') 2 She-Hulk, Gamma Bombshell 4 Wonder Man, Simon Williams 2 Hercules, Son of Zeus Locations: 2 Avengers Mansion Plot Twists: 3 Air Strike (or Flying Kick) 4 Call Down the Lightning 4 Heroes in Reserve 4 Savage Beatdown/Big Leagues (or any decent ATK pump) 3 Above the Law (MUN) (can be anything else, tuned to the decks you play against, like System Failure is fun if you play allot against other beatdown or pumping decks) This deck is extremely light on rares and pretty straight foreward in the basics, but still got a small bucket of tricks (out of combat stun with hawkeye, some team attack bonus effects, some leader formation etc). Great for a first deck, I teach people the game by letting them play this deck :) The deck can be verymuch tuned with some of the newer avengers reservist cards, but it already works very well :) The list has a small amount of non MAV cards, but they are common/uncommon and should be easy/cheap addins but can be changed too ofc. Goodluck :) Edited by Drstrange, Mar 10 2013, 02:26 PM.

You were both helpful, thanks! DrStrange, it looks like I don't quite have enough of those cards to build that deck, but I'm going to see what kind of Avengers cards I have to see if I can make something similar. Either way, your post is a good example of how a deck can look. Thanks again! |

I started with Avengers reservist over 12 months ago after a recommendation on this site and found it to be a great starting point for all the reasons that DRstrange has given cheap, very easy to play but still competitive. At the time I had bought 2 boxes of MAV and a few starters and found that I could put 90%+ of the deck together although savage beatdown obviously wasn't in there and it was 4 copies of flying kick instead. I think that I was short of the odd uncommon but replacing it with any equiviolent reservist card didn't weaken the deck to any real degree. One mistake that I did make with the deck was to think that mixing a few leaders with reservist's would work better but apart from the occasional lucky draw this was rarely the case as the reservist's were needed to make the PT's work. Having now made a lot of decks I still can't think of a better deck for a beginner (I still think of myself as a beginner but I guess I'm not really any more). Team attacking X-men could be another good option for you with cards from MOR and MXM although I don't think that it is as competitive. Cheers Dave |

I had the same idea to make an X-Men team attack deck as well, just to give it a try until I can get some more Avengers cards. I definitely want to try an Avengers reservist deck because you make them sound both easy to use and effective (plus I could benefit from a good starting point since I'm new). By the way, I'm glad I found this site. Helpful people and a lot of information! |

why dont you try "squadron no hand"? thats one of the best aggro deck to start playing the game, the only thing you have to worry about is to use all the cards in your hand fast and hit hard and early. also the cards are very easy to get an cheaper than the avengers cards. |

Here's a no rares version of Chicken Supreme (No Hand version of Squadron Supreme). It's mostly cards from avengers with a few things from other sets. Characters 4 [MAV] Ape X-Xina 4 [MAV] Joystick-Janice Yanizesh 4 [MAV] Shape-Malleable Mutant 4 [MAV] Melissa Gold <> Songbird-Sonic Carapace 4 [MAV] Lady Lark-Linda Lewis 4 [MAV] Golden Archer-Wyatt McDonald 4 [MAV] Albert Gaines <> Nuke-Atomic Powerhouse 1 [MAV] Whizzer-Stanley Stewart Plot Twists 2 [MSM] Jetpack 1 [MAV] Airskimmer 4 [MAV] Thunder Jet 4 [MAV] Panacea Potion 4 [MAV] Answer the Call 4 [DOR] Mega-Blast 4 [MOR] Flying Kick 4 [MUN] Now I'm Fighting Dirty 4 [MOR] Surprise Attack This isn't set in stone. But it's a good start. The best character additions would be Haywire from MHG, a copy of the rare Lady Lark from MXM and the 6 drop Genis-Vell from MXM. For support cards you could also dabble with Rocket Central (though I wouldn't go with more than two) and/or Other Earth which can be good as a finisher. Whether you want the rares or not this is one of the best decks you can build on a budget. The only downside is that the play style of the deck differs from just about every other deck in the game and is somewhat counter intuitive in a game that places such value on having cards in hand. Basically, you want to burn through your hand as quickly as possible and play from turn 3 on with zero cards in hand relying completely on having already rowed your higher drop reservists/topdecking your characters or search cards (hence the "Chicken" nickname). It sounds crazy but it works really, really well once you've got the practice. |

Yep Squadron no hand is indeed the other budget deck in the MAV set. Squadron was actually the first competative deck I build in this game, but I actually enjoyed it allot less, in the long run. The deck is a big blast to pick up and play, but for multiple games I never enjoyed it enough. Mainly because you play with what the deck gives you, you have very limited "surpirse" after that turn because the nice playstyle doesnt allow you. Also its the one deck that screwed me more than any, with a near perfect play the first 3 rounds, but missing Archer or Albert and losing the game after a 40 endurance lead. But thats pretty subjective I guess :) , the deck is very fun, cheap, easy to pilot and strong as hell. I actually ever bought 2 MAV boxes and could build both decks 90% and traded the last few cards :) If you can manage to get both decks, they have some very exciting games between them :) Id give a slight edge to Squadron, but fitting 3 system failures in the reservist deck pulls the power about even! I remember readin that report of the guy going 10-0 with avengers reservist on day 1 of a PC back in '05-'06 in a field of squadron and other beatdown (all that he had diff from the other reservist decks were 3 system failures). Think on day 2 a friend played his deck in a side event with a 7-0 record aswell. Good shine for reservist! Tobad the guy wasnt that great in draft and he didnt make day 3. |

I am really interested in trying a Squadron no hand deck now also! I had no idea how many possibilities there were when it comes to deck building with this game until saw the variety of cards. I need to get an Avengers booster box so I can try to make this deck! Again, thanks so much. You guys are really knowledgable |
