Hey everyone. I plan to run a D&D game here in Orlando in the near future. We'll be using very basic rules (Player's Manual and Dungeon Master's Guide) with more of an emphasis on story and adventure than on rules-lawyering. No knowledge of the rules is required, and I have the books. I think I even have electronic copies somewhere, I'll have to check. The players will all create level 1 characters who will already know, like, and have some basic trust in each other at the start of the game. Of course this may change over the course of the game, but I can't stand games where one of the players immediately causes problems with the group. So far, Chadoe and Shakacon have expressed an interest in playing. I'd like at least 1 more person before I start the game. My plan is to play one every other week for about four hours. We'll all have to get together to see if there's a good time to meet. For me, I think Saturday night around 7pm is probably the best. I know that we all have crazy lives, so we may have to move games around every now and then to make sure everyone can attend. It shouldn't be too hard with only 4 or 5 people. Post here if you would like to play and/or have ideas about the game you'd like to express. I'll be thinking of the introductory plot over the next week or two. |

The more I think about it, the more I want to handle things like this... First, the players will make characters. This can either happen on your own if you have books and feel comfortable doing it that way, or with me helping you. This will be our first gaming session and probably take about 2 hours. Then, we'll have our first game a week or two later. That will give us some time to think about how everyone's characters know each other and discuss it a little bit on the forums. That way, when we get together for our 4-hour game, we can dive right into some kind of adventure. I want everyone to make their characters however they want without worrying about what skills are needed for the group. If we end up with all fighters, then I'll find a way to help the party out with healing potions or a sneaky NPC they can go to for dirty work. It will be fun to match the adventures to whatever crazy group make-up we end up with. Here's a few house rules that I use: - Don't worry about encumbrance. Just apply common sense to how much stuff you can carry. - Everyone starts with at least 8 hit points. - Everyone has a petty cash fund to pay for food and cheap inn rooms. We do not track petty stuff like this. Your gold is for other stuff. - Everyone will start with whatever reasonable adventuring gear they want, including a horse. - We do not use preset alignments. If a power or rule mentions player alignment, I will decide how it works on the fly. Fun game play is more important than strict adherence to your character's morals. Some players like to be stand-up citizens and some like to be thieving assassins. We need to suspend a little disbelief in order for everyone to continue working together toward whatever common goals you have. So, if the thief is off by himself for a while and comes back with a little extra gold, don't give him an inquisition about where he was and how he got the money. You probably don't want to know. Its always good to have someone around for the dirty work, anyway. This is not a rule, but a suggestion to avoid unnecessary friction among players. You are all adults and friends, so this shouldn't be a problem. |
