I apologise for the lack of enthusiasm for the awards this year. Unfortunately, I've already got a couple of projects under my sleeve that require most of my attention, not to mention the fact that work itself seems to have gotten the better of me as of late. |

Considering how much of this year I've missed, I'm not sure how much my input really means this year, but I'll look things over and see what I can come up with anyways. |

Match of the Year: Broken Matt Hardy vs. Brother Nero - The Final Deletion This match was something new, unique, creative, entertaining as hell, and above all else that places it higher than any other match this year for me, it was memorable. Wrestler of the Year: AJ Styles PPV of the Year: Shit, I dunno, what was the PPV that had Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn brawling across about three different matches? I guess that one... Feud of the Year: AJ Styles vs. Dean Ambrose I guess? Or maybe AJ Styles vs. John Cena? Breakout Star of the Year: Broken Matt Hardy Female Wrestler of the Year: Becky Fucking Lynch Tag-Team of the Year: Team Kevin and Chris NXT Wrestler of the Year: Shinsuke Nakamura Non-Wrestler of the Year: The List Most Underrated Wrestler of the Year: Roman Reigns Most Improved Wrestler of the Year: The Miz Most Charismatic/Best Mic Work of the Year: Chris Jericho Best (face/heel) Turn of the Year: AJ Styles Move of the Year: The move where Styles ran down to the ring to beat down John Cena about a half dozen times in a row. Gimmick of the Year: Broken Matt Hardy Worst Match of the Year: Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar Worst Wrestler of the Year: Goldberg Worst PPV of the Year: Survivor Series Worst Feud of the Year: Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar Most Overrated Wrestler of the Year: Goldberg Least Charismatic/Worst Mic Work of the Year: Goldberg Worst Gimmick of the Year: Goldberg Botch of the Year: Goldberg defeating Brock Lesnar

Don't think I've ever properly participated in one of these before... Match of the Year: Sami Zayn vs. Shinsuke Nakamura, NXT TakeOver: Dallas Wrestler of the Year: AJ Styles PPV of the Year: NXT TakeOver: Dallas (I couldn't pick one of the main WWE shows because for all the good matches that happened, there were things in all of them that just felt out of place to me) Feud of the Year: AJ Styles vs. John Cena Breakout Star of the Year: Shinsuke Nakamura Female Wrestler of the Year: Asuka Tag-Team of the Year: The Revival NXT Wrestler of the Year: Oh crap... erm... have another one, Shinsuke Non-Wrestler of the Year: CFO$. They're just showing off with half the themes they make now. Most Underrated Wrestler of the Year: The Miz. Stellar year. Most Improved Wrestler of the Year: Braun Strowman (Jebus Christ...) Most Charismatic/Best Mic Work of the Year:The Miz Best (face/heel) Turn of the Year: AJ Styles Move of the Year: Coast-To-Coast countered in to a Spear by Reigns at Survivor Series Gimmick of the Year: The List of Jericho Worst Match of the Year: Curtis Axel vs. R-Truth, WWE Fastlane. Just.. why? What was the point? Worst Wrestler of the Year: Eva Marie Worst PPV of the Year: WWE Fastlane Worst Feud of the Year: (For the basis of WWE's intentions of the portrayal of characters being the polar opposite of what they were trying to achieve) Roman Reigns vs. Rusev Most Overrated Wrestler of the Year: I *guess* Big Cass, but only by default of him being put in the Universal Title Fatal 4 Way where he didn't belong, and that it seems they're pushing him more as a singles competitor than a tag team with Enzo. As OK as Cass is, he's lost without Enzo. Least Charismatic/Worst Mic Work of the Year: Nikki Bella/Naomi. Some of their promos (now both are face) this year have been almost vomit-inducing. Worst Gimmick of the Year: The Titus Brand (chose eventually over Shining Stars & Make Darren Young Great Again). Literally nothing came of it. Botch of the Year: Kalisto's gonna make a good Lucha Thing. |

I'm not saying that he's overrated as he's shown that he can work single matches with some degree of success, but he's not underrated. Roman, as Vince's babyface, is in the right spot with the US title as a mid card guy. He is not a top star. |

I suppose this comes down to what our definition of underrated/overrated is (something that I recall was an issue brought up with these categories last year. ). He's not underrated by the company, but he is by the fans. |

I've come to a point where I could accept Reigns as a main event player, but it's all handled wrong simply because he isn't heel. Change that one thing and I think Roman would be fine in the main event scene - but as we all know, it just ain't gonna happen... |

I was just thinking this last night. Roman would be an AWESOME heel. But damn WWE is just too stubborn these days, and it really doesn't even make sense anymore. With Cena, he was at least selling those shirts and doing all those Make A Wish appearances, but what does Roman have going on in comparison? Are the kids really buying into his shit on anywhere even near that level to warrant WWE's stubbornness with turning him heel? Shit, in the process, we're missing out on a true potential mega-star, and his career's gonna be the one that ultimately suffers from it in the long run. :\ |

The problem here is that you could potentially break up a lot of these categories into ''sub-categories'' based on what the fans think compared to what the company does. A few years back, I found that the easiest way around this issue was to combine both the fans' and company's reaction together, and then come up with an overall winner that way. I mean, WWE is still made up of people with varying opinions too, is it not? For instance, last time I checked, Roman Reigns actually had a rather large legion of fans online, and sometimes you can hear quite a few audience members cheering for him (depending on the location). Couple that together with how most WWE officials feel about him, and for me he would sit somewhere in the middle of the scale - after taking into account those who despise him, of course. I mean, if we're separating one group from another, then shouldn't we also distinguish the hardcore fans from the casual fans? It wouldn't really be that much of a stretch, especially considering that they, too, have been known to share separate views (in particular, how they overrate/underrate certain wrestlers). Where exactly does one draw the line? Even though I'm aware it's ultimately up to WWE to decide which superstar makes it to the top, to me it doesn't change it from being just another opinion in a vast sea of diverse viewpoints. Those who run the company are still a part of the overall equation, at least, in my mind they are anyway. Don't get me wrong or anything, I'm not trying to have a go here, it just doesn't seem like much of an issue to me. That said, maybe it's just because I'm so used to my own approach, I haven't stopped to consider that other people may have a different way of seeing things.

Wrestlemania 3 Main Eventer

I remember that discussion last year too. The way I've always felt about it is: underrated = someone I feel isn't being used as well as they should be/to their full potential. Almost like they're wasted. overrated = someone who is used too much/pushed too hard who doesn't really have the skills or ability to be in that position. |

Wrestlemania 3 Main Eventer

Match of the Year: Sami Zayn vs Shinsuke Nakamura (NXT TakeOver: Dallas) - Just an awesome match from both guys and a great way to debut Nakamura. From the moment Nakamura's music hit he felt like a star and there's no better way to start someone off. Then he and Zayn just tore the house down beating the piss out of one another. It was a fantastic match to watch. Wrestler of the Year: AJ Styles. - Absolutely fantastic year start to finish. Top feuds, good matches and a fantastic heel run that I never knew he was capable of. He did have a couple duds throughout the year but fortunately he was able to move past all of that and it never derailed his momentum. PPV of the Year: Backlash. - Since it does say ppv I don't think the NXT specials quite count, but that's okay because we have Backlash to be grateful for. Becky won the women's title, Slater and Rhino won the tag titles and best of all AJ won the world title. Plus Miz and Ziggler had a fantastic match as well. Feud of the Year: DIY vs The Revival. - As with most things in NXT there isn't a lot of talking to build feuds, and this one was no exception to that. Instead it just featured fantastic wrestling and 2 teams trying to get the better of each other. The 2 out of 3 falls match for the NXT tag titles is a fucking awesome match that I strongly considered match of the year. Breakout Star of the Year: Shinsuke Nakamura. - I didn't know anything about him prior to getting signed by WWE, but since he arrived they treated him like a big deal but more importantly his charisma and mannerisms (while a bit odd) are simply captivating and entertaining. He's just a fun dude to watch. Female Wrestler of the Year: Charlotte Flair. - I know she may not be the most popular choice, but once she became full heel she excelled in her promos. They're also pushing her to the moon so good for her considering she once had to endure Steph ripping her a new one on live TV. Tag-Team of the Year: The New Day. - I don't know how you could say any other team. They have the longest title reign now and several times they had entertaining promos and skits that produced legit lol moments or times when I thought I can't believe they just said that. NXT Wrestler of the Year: Samoa Joe. - For as great as Nakamura has been this year, Joe was just as good. His last couple years in TNA he did not give a fuck about what he was doing, but now he looks revitalized and like the Joe of old. Now when the fans chant "Joe's gonna kill you" it is a believable chant as he looks like a badass motherfucker again. Non-Wrestler of the Year: All these nameless backstage interviewers. - Who are they? Where did they come from? What are their names? Nobody knows these answers and it is likely a mystery that will never be solved. Most Underrated Wrestler of the Year: Cesaro. - Even though he had that high profile feud with Sheamus and is now a tag team champion, he could be so much more. The guy can go in the ring and can do crazy feats of strength, that will get anyone over. It was a huge missed opportunity not to put him on Smackdown and have him as a top card guy involved in world title matches. Cesaro deserves more. Most Improved Wrestler of the Year: Broken Matt Hardy. - I've never been much of a Matt fan. To me he was always the other Hardy, essentially the Jannetty of the group. When he first came out doing his odd British accent and his Sweeney Todd hair everybody shit all over it. But Matt stuck with it and made it work and damn if it didn't produce some entertaining stuff. Most Charismatic/Best Mic Work of the Year:Kevin Owens. - For a man who learned English as a second language he sure has a way with words. He's often funny and quick witted and everything he says is full of passion and energy. He may very well be scripted but he doesn't sound like it which is a bonus because then it feels authentic. Best (face/heel) Turn of the Year: AJ Styles. - I would have said Neville but he hasn't done much of yet. But without a doubt his heel turn was much needed. Charlotte's was also good as she is light years better as a heel than a face, but for AJ I was impressed with how effective he is as a heel. Move of the Year: Finn Balor's Coup de GrĂ¢ce. - It just an impressive looking move to watch and looks like it really knocks the wind out of a person as Finn comes down with the double stomp. Gimmick of the Year: Everything Jericho. - After a few years of throwaway shit and silly lite brite jackets he finally became funny and entertaining again. He rides a fine line between being serious and a total goof and it's perfect. Like people legit cheer when he writes a person's name on a list. That's just fantastic. Drink it in, maaaaan. Worst Match of the Year: Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar (Survivor Series). - Okay, I get the idea behind it was to build towards the third match, and I can understand WWE wanting to do something shocking and that got people talking. However, for a match that was as heavily promoted as it was and to main event a show only to be over as quickly as it was made it pretty shitty. Worst Wrestler of the Year: Dana Brooke. - Called up from NXT waaaaay too soon. Worst PPV of the Year: Fastlane. - It could and should have been a good card, but there were just so many dumb decisions sprinkled throughout the show that it really brought the overall thing down. Definitely the worst show of the year. Worst Feud of the Year: Darren Young vs Titus O'Neil. - It only lasted a short time, but it was long enough to be the worst. Titus punched Bob Backlund at some point, the matches were garbage, nobody cared about either man, why did this happen?? Most Overrated Wrestler of the Year: Gallows and Anderson. - Yeah it's 2 people, but it applies to both. The commentary always hypes them up as stars from Japan, but they've done nothing in the WWE to make that seem true. Big high profile feuds have ended in losses for them. They did the horribly unfunny doctor skits with eggs in jars, and now they walk around calling everybody "nerds". They haven't earned the TV time they've gotten. Least Charismatic/Worst Mic Work of the Year: Big Cass. - The guy just doesn't seem comfortable doing promos on live TV. Granted he's probably just reciting words written by someone else from memory so he's more concerned with saying everything he's supposed to rather than making it sound natural, but he just comes off as robotic. I have hope that he can improve, and in backstage segments he seems better, but currently he's pretty much the worse. Worst Gimmick of the Year: The Shining Stars. - They had vignettes that didn't really make it specific if they were heels or faces, and then those vignettes went on for longer than necessary. They came out to zero reaction and eventually became timeshare scam artists. Fantastic! I think the Spanish bull fighters gimmick was better. Botch of the Year: Titus O'Neil's promo where he literally botched every single line. BONUS categories just for fun. Joke of the Year: The League of Nations. (Remember them??) Surprise of the Year: AJ Styles debut in the Rumble. Disappointment of the Year: Finn Balor relinquishes the Universal Title due to injury the night after winning it. The "Oh, fuck off with that" moment of the Year: Roman Reigns vs. Rusev at Hell in a Cell. - Specifically how Rusev had Roman in the Accolade ontop of the steel steps and was using a motherfuckin STEEL CHAIN to lock the hold in but Reigns still got out of it, won the match and showed no ill effects the next night on Raw. The Jack Swagger Award for excellency at being horrible at everything: Mojo Rawley. |
