If pro wrestling is seen as athletic theater, what is the WWE doing to keep "sports entertainment" alive and making sure no two performances are the same? I can answer this: nothing. They've been following the same structure that they've had for almost 20 years now. Wrestling should be worked like it's a sport, which back in the 80's and 90's the matches were treated as such, it's just that they contained really wacky characters working them. Now we have more mainstream character as we live in the era of reality of the MMA fighter and there needs to be an emphasis on clean finishes and not interference, distraction rollups, etc to advance storylines. Then I guess the WWE will continue its slow slide. The product isn't compelling enough when they pretend to be MMA when you've got guys like Sheamus looking like a doofus with his mohawk running around the ring. It worked pretending pro wrestling was combat sport back then in the 80s and 90s when most fans were still marks but the illusion is gone. The emphasis has to now be on making compelling storylines but not forgetting the primary focus - to create exciting matches. And recently there isn't synergy between the two. We'll get a great storyline accompanied by a series of bad matches or a great match accompanied by bad storytelling so we're left with nothing memorable at the end of a feud or you question if there was even a feud there. And when you get this week in and week out, people are going to turn the channel to an actual sport or tune into a more interesting tv show. Yeah, what made the Punk-Cena match at MitB 2011 to me was the build and the match. Generally speaking the matches today are pretty good, but the finishes to most of them are so fucking dusty. Get rid of the dust, have one guy win and the other lose and what you'll get is guys who get over and people take seriously. I can't take Rollins seriously as a champion. Sure, he's a great talent, but if you put him one on one with Lesnar, Cena, Ambrose, Kane, etc. and have no shenanigans, Rollins has been booked to look incapable to winning a match clean. He beat Sting clean, but that was after he lost to Cena. All his none title matches, Rollins loses. If you're gonna have a heel be champion, at least book him strongly like Owens. Strong booking=guys that are over and interested fans.
