It's been reported that even though Triple H has steadily assumed more control behind-the-scenes in WWE, during the last several months or so, Vince McMahon has apparently decided to once again play a more prominent role backstage. Which has resulted in him making a lot more key decisions as of late. RAW's declining ratings supposedly helped influence Vince's determination to start overseeing all aspects of the company more than he had done previously.
I think you must mean Vince, not Triple H is assuming more control. Of course, it's Vince's oversight that's causing the ratings to drop and lack of interest to develop. The buck stops with Vince, shit like the booking of Tyler Breeze is on Vince. The lack of pushing guys or developing stories around them at the best times, is on Vince. By this I mean a guy like Mark Henry is clearly retiring at Wrestlemania. WWE is trying to build a story with him leaving, but so far that's only been Cole talking about it on commentary and Henry got eliminated at the Rumble after 30 seconds.

Not very convincing WWE.

Then there's the booking of ppv's like Survivor Series, which admittedly was hampered with Rollins injury, is on Vince. I'm of the belief had Rollins been injured the only difference would have been instead of the tournament series, it would have been Ambrose and Owens for the IC title and Reigns-Rollins with the same Sheamus cash in.

Vince is the problem and has been for a while now. He's the final say on all matters and as such, he's fully responsible for the success or failure of the total product. It's not the wrestlers fault on anything, they put in their best effort with everything even though they now the material they're given is total shit. The announcers, Cole & JBL, they're told what to say by Vince himself and there's little they can do.

Vince is the problem, not the solution. I'd rather see him only have full control over the Mr. McMahon character and that be it. Overall though, I think the biggest problem in WWE is this whole fucking Authority angle. I was tired of this thing 2 years ago, let alone now. The concept of Roman Reigns fighting with the Authority is a joke in and of itself. Reigns is exactly what they want and if WWE had any balls to do something different, they'd turn Roman Reigns to just join the Authority.

I think it's getting a little too late to do that and if WWE's planning some sort of union between the two at Mania or the Raw after, they've just opened the WCW wormhole straight to Hell.

Jim Cornette gave on of his well know rants about Lucha Underground. I've only seen bits and pieces of the show, and I think maybe Jim is being too harsh here.

Oh I misread that for being Jim Ross, and was like "doesn't sound like something good ol' JR would say". Only to reread to see it's actually Jim Cornette.

Is any pro wrestling company believable? Does WWE, TNA, ROH, etc make us believe it's all legit? No. Lucha Underground, in my opinion, just makes the out-of-ring experience better than any other wrestling company. The story segments, interviews, and general vignettes are all more interesting than what anyone else have produced.

If I was a betting man, I'd say Cornette's being so sour because he's just jealous.

That would be fantastic to see JR go on a profanity laced tirade about something. It would probably be about the quality of BBQ sauce, but still worth it.

Crusader makes some good points (!!!). While maybe those backstage segments may not be changing the face of wrestling, they are something different and something unique to LU. Which is good for them as it helps them to stand out. I cant comment on the matches though.

Cornette has a habit of saying anything not associated with him is shit. Cornette is a guy who is way too wrapped up in himself, but occasionally he hits the nail on the head like that 5 minute video I found of him talking about Vince McMahon's personality disorder in needing to have his ass kissed all the time.

Is Lucha Underground true wrestling? No, because they're not a promotion, they're a television show. But really, what is "true wrestling?" Is Attitude Era WWF true wrestling? Compared with mid to late 80's WCW/ Jim Crockett Promotions it'd be considered blasphemy and a corruption of wrestling to garner ratings.

Lucha Underground is supposed to be Lucha, it's not the usual wrestling we are use to or have seen for years and that's why it's good. It's different and that's what wrestling needs.

Cornette sounds like an old man who's out of touch, but unlike Vince McMahon's disconnection with what the fans want, Cornette is out of touch because he's so ingrained with what he knows and believes in. Vince doesn't believe in anything, he doesn't even fucking like wrestling, Cornette loves wrestling, but he loves it so much he really thinks it can be this veritable form of a sport. Decades ago that may have been an acceptable business strategy, but now that kayfabe is dead, the internet exists, and people know wrestling is a work, it's not sensible to hold to Cornette's rigid view of wrestling.

What wrestling is supposed to be is fun and entertaining. WWE for the most part is boring as shit and people hate it. Lucha Underground, New Japan, and NXT are three very different brands but are all great fun to watch.

So, Lucha Underground isn't shit, having a second season proves that. Perhaps if Cornette were a bit more flexible, he wouldn't be unemployed at the moment.

Excellent points all around, Truth.

My biggest gripe with the current WWE is that the company forgot Raw and Smackdown were tv shows. PPVs should be all about wrestling and delivering your best in terms of matches. And a ton of the old-school stuff works well for ppvs (backstage interviews, cutting a promo right before a match, etc.). But Raw and Smackdown need to be treated like tv shows. There needs to be quality storytelling, story arcs, character development which lead wrestlers into matches and feuds. And they need to keep tabs on every single wrestler on the roster so you don't leave most of your roster hanging out to dry 90% of the time. Remember their past feuds, don't sporadically use certain talent (give them kind of direction).

I honestly don't understand Cornette's thinking here. Pro Wrestling isn't a sport. It's just like a movie, a tv show and it's completely predetermined. Pro wrestling is athletic theater and the ring is the stage. And before the advent of tv and cable, the ring was enough. But each technology advancement helped the transition from the times when everyone thought pro wrestling was a sport to now where everyone knows it's "fake" (hate using that word). Professional Wrestling is a work, a theatrical work. That's real wrestling, Cornette.

Remember during Raw when Rock addressed the fans who were dressed as legends? Well the WWE is not very happy about that, because those fans were originally moved because they were distracting, and then WWE felt they were "rewarded" with being on air. Then it also says that if anyone else other than Rock or Cena had done that they would have been fired.

What's odd about this is Rock is essentially what Vince wants, an entertainer. He heard the Randy Savage chants and he acknowledged it and interacted with them on the fly. It entertained the fans and made them feel a part of the show. But anyone else would have gotten in trouble for that. Now okay, think of the fans as sheep that will buy whatever you tell them to, but if you treat them like they're special and that they are actually being heard they will have a greater appreciation for what's happening.

There's no question had it not been the Rock, they probably would have cut his mic and escorted him out of the building. Rock gets away with it because WWE desperately needs him, he doesn't need WWE.

I think the Rock went into Raw last week on a mission to cut the scripted bullshit and make the funnest segment he could, butthurt corporate fools be damned! Rock probably coked it up before he did that segment, which is fine because it was fun and to show a little coke is a good thing in wrestling.

Yeah, Rock has a long leash and the sad thing is that WWE use to encourage creativity and hardcore fandom back in the day. Now, they don't and that's another part of why WWE sucks. Part of it is because WWE is so scripted, but another part of it is WWE holds people back from getting over naturally, or outside of what WWE allows. To put a face to what I'm saying, Dean Ambrose is so over with fans that he should win the title at Mania after winning the triple threat match at WWE Fastlane. Why, because Ambrose is naturally over.

Instead, WWE is going to choose their chosen hero Roman Reigns because they don't listen to the fans. Ambrose is a guy who can think on his feet and his talent is held back in his current role. Reigns can't think on his feet and he's proven that. This isn't to say Reigns is worthless, he has a place high on the card, but he's not really over with fans and the creative entertainment that comes from him is so much less than what Ambrose could have.

Also, I loved that part with Rock and Big Show. Both were pretty equal back in 2000 and look at how different their lives are now.

I really want to hear from guys like Kane, Mark Henry and Big when they retire and they can share with us how the whole process has changed. The company during the attitude took more risks because of competition from wcw; more backstage competition (politicking). Seems like the current roster generally have a good rapport with each other - and it will likely continue to improve as NXTers move to the main roster. NXT is a great setting to build camaraderie. All in all, I really want to their perceptions on those sorts of things.

I know a common gripe with the current product is the roster can't improvise at all. Sadly I don't think WWE is training them to do that. Maybe going the indy route would help with developing those improvisation skills but those skills ultimately wouldn't matter if they ever become WWE superstars. Just ask Roman Reigns or Brock Lesnar how much mic skills matter. So improvisation skills on top of quality mic work doesn't really matter to the WWE.

Lastly, I'll play the what if game - what if The Rock and Roman Reigns developed in each other's eras. Roman would have to adapt like the Rock did after Rocky Maivia proved to be a disaster. And when the Rock was starting out, most wrestlers were playing some kind of professional so Roman would probably have been made a lifeguard - so would have been repackaged at some point. And if The Rock started out in NXT (FCW), he'd probably go through at least one character change before being called up to the main roster and hoping he resonates with fans. He'd probably end up like an Adam Rose or end up like The Ascension - stuck in a bad gimmick for the former or being unnecessarily fiddled with once called up for the latter.

Static, you're forgetting that in WWE, your family bonds mean more than anything else. About the worst treated guys on the roster whose dads were wrestlers are Cody Rhodes and Bo Dallas. Everybody else who has some family connection with wrestling are booked very well.
