I'm not sure on this idea. On one hand there's been a lot of levelling out in the size of guys, so your typical cruiserweights can mix it up with the typical heavyweights. But then there's shit like they do with Kalisto when the commentators constantly mention how small he is and how much of a underdog he is. That sort of ruins it. But on the other hand there have always been some exciting, fast paced matches between crusierweights so maybe they just want to steal viewers away from Lucha Underground.

So this is an interesting interview with CM Punk. It praises his accomplishments, dedication and drive, and then it takes an odd turn. It seems pretty clear that the writer asked a simple question and Punk took it as offensive. He's done it before after all. I'm sure Punk gets a lot of shit, so having an attitude can be justified, but he also seems like he just needs to calm down.

So I'm still reading this article, decided to rewatch Punk's infamous pipebomb. It happened after a match between R-Truth & Cena. Is this the only time R-Truth has ever beaten Cena?? :???:

I read about that and Punk does come off like an asshole. He has his moments and I still appreciate his work regardless

It's really hard getting a clear picture of the current version of CM Punk, the non-wrestler version. He may be experiencing an identity crisis. His wrestling persona was an amplified version of himself. The Straight-Edge; the self-righteousness, fighting The Man - basically all the things that shaped him into CM Punk. The amplified version was who he was for 15 years. He had to live and breathe CM Punk. Now he has to be something else - mma fighter, comic book writer, AJ's husband. And maybe in his heart he doesn't want to be someone else or feels he cannot stop being CM Punk.

Right now, he's in a fortunate position. He's in a similar position to The Rock a few years back. He has an opportunity outside the ring where he can shed his wrestling identiy and show another side of CM Punk the person. If he wants to be Phil Brooks, he needs to rid himself of CM Punk. But that's going to be tough when his wrestling identity mirrors his IRL identity.

Your point about fighting the man is dead on. In his DVD it talks about how he grew up against the world and how he was an outcast. So basically all his life he's been fighting the man. Any sort of criticism that comes up and he fights it. I dont feel like this interviewer was trying to pull any shit, but Punk felt he did and reacted the only way he knows how to.

The picture with Punk is pretty clear to me: He feels he got royally fucked the last 3 years he was in WWE and for the most part, he was. You can't say that him losing to Triple H at NOC, having that feud with Kevin Nash that led to nothing, the alcoholism angle with Jericho to build the title match at WM28, Y2J not winning the Rumble to help make that title match bigger, dropping the belt to the Rock at the Rumble when he should have done it to Cena at Mania, getting saddled with mocking recently deceased Paul Bearer to build his feud with the Undertaker for Mania, the injuries, the money he lost having to do that Mexico WWE tour, getting his pink slip the day of his wedding, etc. Punk has a lot to be angry about and I think it's clear that when he was in WWE, there were a number of people above him who didn't like him.

Punk still feels he has to defend himself every time and he does. He's said that at times he wasn't the easiest person to work with and I don't doubt that one bit. If there's any one thing that I believe Punk did wrong in his last year or so with WWE was his bad attitude. There were multiple factors affecting his poor attitude that you couldn't blame entirely on him, such as his heavy work schedule, the anti-biotics he was pumped full with, the injuries he didn't get time to heal fully, etc. but he did sign a contract and should commit to that.

I'm not Phil Brooks, I can't put myself in his shoes and say that the night after the Rumble in 2014 I would not have left out of protest, but I would have come back after I felt better to finish my contract.

If there's anything Punk is guilty of it's that he cared too much. Punk cared too much to main event a Wrestlemania, cared to much to knock it out of the park with every angle and promo he did, cared too much to be the best in WWE. Punk and the fans have one overwhelming gripe that neither got when we should have and that was Punk and Cena main eventing a Wrestlemania for the WWE title. That could have been the greatest main event in Wrestlemania history had it happened, but we'll never know.

The current version of Phil Brooks will never shed CM Punk because it's CM Punk that created the current Phil Brooks. Even after 2 years, Punk is still carrying that anger of how he was treated in WWE; it was the whole reason he left. If one day CM Punk wakes up and forgives the people he feel fucked him, he'll lose that drive that's propelling him to be a UFC fighter. Every move Punk has made professionally has been a middle finger to WWE in him saying, "Fuck you, I don't need you."

I basically thought the same thing when I left my first job.

Punk is in a fortunate position, he can go in so many directions with his career even though I think he wants to go back to WWE in time. He says never again because he's still pissed off, but I know better because I said the same stuff the first year I was away from LMC.

That's unfortunately where the similarities between me and him end. The thing is Punk and myself both share one thing that keeps us away: we want to be in the place we left, but we care too much to be there.
