There is speculation online that Rey Mysterio may be returning to WWE, at least on a part-time basis. On his podcast, former WCW star Konnan said that Mysterio would consider going back to WWE if he can get a reduced schedule. Following Konnan’s statement, Dave Meltzer explained on Wrestling Observer Radio this weekend that AAA and Lucha Underground were banking on Alberto Del Rio and Rey Mysterio to be their big stars. With Del Rio returning to WWE, and Mysterio considering following suit, Meltzer feels this is very telling about the status of the companies. ProWrestlingSheet reports that Mysterio is currently in a dispute with AAA over money, and what he perceives as “shady business practices.” Mysterio hasn’t appeared for AAA since 2015 despite being under contract. Adding to the speculation, Mysterio’s name has been mentioned on WWE programming several times in recent months. WWE.com did a feature on him, and JBL even gave him a shoutout during the Royal Rumble. Back in August, Mysterio explained his willingness to return in an interview with Sports Illustrated. “I didn’t leave on bad terms. I left on good terms with WWE, so I don’t want to say never,” Mysterio said. “They treated me very well, and I’m nothing but thankful with that company for letting Rey Mysterio be Rey Mysterio and be recognized worldwide. On honestly don't want to see Mysterio back in WWE. Every return from a knee injury was just time in between his next knee injury. Mysterio continuing to get older doesn't bode well for his style of wrestling, a style that can't be changed because of his size. Mysterio's not like Jushin Liger who can go from high flying to a ground based or brawler style because Mysterio is a tiny man. Mysterio is 41, he's closer the end of his career than the beginning, and I don't think anything WWE gives him will be worth doing. I know WWE has the money, which I've said before should be the deciding factor in all career decisions, but at what point do you realize that the more people that defect to WWE, the less competition WWE will ever have? The less competition WWE has, the lower the compensation WWE will have to offer someone. WWE needs competition and Lucha Underground/AAA may be one of the only promotions that can slip into the US and become competition for WWE with the other being New Japan. |
