I've been watching the DVD set called 'Attitude Era Vol. 3: Unreleased' and it's a collection of dark and live event matches that have never really been shown before. Some of them are pretty neat but some have video quality issues to them which kind of sucks. I've been watching all the Shawn Michaels matches first (because who wouldn't?) and there are 2 things I wanted to mention. The first match took place in Kuwait in 1996 between HBK and Steve Austin for the WWF Championship. Austin was dubbed Stone Cold at this point but didn't have his signature theme music and still carried the stupid million dollar title. But at the beginning of the match Earl Hebner did the pat down of the wrestlers to see if they were carrying anything and he actually found a fork hidden in the waistband of Austin's trunks. A fork! I thought that was brilliant because it's little touches like that which help build a character. The last time I really remember something like that was whenever it was that William Regal would carry brass knuckles and he would get patted down before a match to see if he had them. It also got me thinking that they do the pat down for the cruiserweights but I've never seen them found something. Now maybe they don't want to give off the impression to kids to use a fork or other household items, but finding something could help to make someone feel more like a heel and less generic. The other match is from February 1997 and is HBK defending the WWF Championship against Bret Hart and Sycho Sid in Toronto. Shawn does get a little heel heat from the crowd, but is still mainly cheered because this is February of 1997 and not November 1997. The match is what you'd expect with each guy getting a chance to shine but it's the finish that I really enjoy. So Shawn is tossed outside of the ring and Bret has beaten down Sid because he sucks and he's going to lock on the sharpshooter. Bret gets Sid's legs into position and he's just about to turn around and roll Sid onto his belly when out of nowhere Shawn comes flying at Bret with a diving crossbody and into the cover. But because Bret's legs are still tangled with Sid's and the big doof is out of it Bret can't muster the force to kick out and Shawn sneaks out a victory. Despite there being no commentary at all the story is still there and able to be understood. We don't always need commentators arguing among themselves to beat us over the head with the obvious. Live events are fun because the wrestlers can play to the crowd rather than playing to a tv audience. |

About the commentary, I remember that Madison Square Garden live event they broadcast on WWE Network that had Brock doing a match with Big Show. It was supposed to just be a broadcast event with no commentators, but last minute WWE turned it into a special and had Cole and JBL there to do commentary and I really hated that they did that. Me being a fan whose only ever watched WWE on television with commentary, I wanted to see how different it was when I could hear the crowd, the action in the ring, etc. but without commentary. I'll make it a point to go to a live show in the near future to get a feel for how different it is. I've read stuff online from people who've been to the Live shows and it's nothing but positive. |

It's just a completely different feel compared to watching it on TV because in the crowd you are a part of the show. I've only ever been twice and they both were a lot of fun and it was neat to see the ring in person and hear it as people got slammed onto it. I can't speak for the ppvs and tv show events because those have commercial breaks and backstage segments to sit through. But if you've never been to one I'd definitely recommend it, even if you're unsatisfied with the current product because a live event is like an experience. |

I used to go to live events all the time. They're definitely a lot of fun, though I stopped going to them a number of years back, despite them still coming through my town relatively often. Still, some of my favorite matches I've ever seen were live, such as a live match between Jericho and Flair, and it's also interesting when you see future TV and PPV matches being tested live first. For instance, there was a match between Goldust and I believe The Godfather way back when that we saw at a live event, only for them to have spot for spot the exact same match on PPV. And also the RVD/Kane steel cage match from Raw just after Kane first unmasked was first tested out on the road, and we got to see that match live as well. It's definitely a different experience though, and those are sort of a rare example. Most of the time, you'll see all sorts of shit that you'd never see on television. Matches are allowed to go longer, they'll try out tag team combinations you wouldn't typically see on TV, and people who aren't allowed to win on TV will oftentimes come out on top if they're a fan favorite, since it's not being televised so it doesn't really matter anyways. It can be a fun time, for sure. As far as TV and PPVs are concerned, I've actually never been to a TV taping, but done a number of PPV's some time back. Those were always fun. Though it's odd that they would have the announce team be miced so that the live audience can hear them. Only time I ever had that happen was at a small time indy show. Fun fact about that particular show: We saw MVP wrestle on that show, which was a few years before he ever made his WWE debut, and we also saw Marty Jannety wrestle in the main event.

WWE announced they're going to do live shows on Christmas Day and New Year's Day instead of the usual taped content. Why? Why the fuck not, asshole? It just seems like a strange idea because I'm sure the performers and crew would have wanted to spend that time at home with family, plus good luck pulling in viewers. What family household is going to put on Monday Night Raw when at the same time Home Alone is playing? Link to the past |

I've been watching that Kurt Angle DVD and there's a WWF Championship match against Undertaker from Survivor Series 2000 on there. The match isn't anything too special but they have an interview with Kurt reflecting back on it and he says that it would not be believable for him to legitimately beat Undertaker at that point in his career, so they came up with a way to cheat which was his brother Eric dressed like Kurt getting involved. But Undertaker's attire for this match is something else. He's wearing these weird snake-skin style pants and for a guy that has really ever worn black or denim it's just strange looking.

And since we're on the topic of the Taker, I do want to mention something that I would really like to see them do with him if he comes back for another match or more. After the lead up to Mania this year where there was really no build at all to the match with Reigns, I found it pretty underwhelming that Taker wasn't allowed to do promos more like the Bad Ass and less like the Deadman. The Deadman Undertaker promos are limiting to what Taker can do on the mic. He's capable of cutting great promos, but then again at this time in WWE and the way they script every fucking detail, it may not work. Still, we've seen this Undertaker for 7+ years with his promos and I long for the days of the Badass to show up and I think if the ABA gimmick were to return, following the loss to Reigns at Mania would warrant it. The gimmick was not bad in restrospect, it was actually really good and Undertaker was a perfect fit for the gimmick. |

I still like the mid to late 90's Undertaker, but yeah, I think the ABA is one of Undertakers best gimmicks. Spoiler: click to toggle

Yeah, and it sucked WWE didn't use him more after they bought WCW. You can't tell me that Heenan would have made a great heel manager for the Alliance. I know Heyman was filling that role, but Heenan could have had a place. That aside, Heenan is one of the best wrestling characters ever. |

If there's anything I want to pay to watch on the WWE Network, it's New Japan Pro Wrestling, Stardom (the promotion Kairi Hojo came from) and Reina. And obviously, Dramatic Dream Team because who doesn't want to see a ladder and a blow up doll win the Hardcore Championship? |
