The Acclaim games were good at the time. Sure the move combinations were weird, but wrestling games are like pseudo-fighting games so it worked at the time. I played the hell out of WWF Attitude. Day of Reckoning were great games too, especially for being on the Gamecube. I'm fairly certain DoR2 is the only WWE game to feature Kenzo Fuckin' Suzuki.

I'm pretty sure that's also the only time anyone has ever said "Kenzo Fuckin' Suzuki"

Wasn't huge on the Smackdown games, but loved the THQ games a ton. Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain is ridiculously good though.

Oh yeah it was great when the crowd would boo you for repetitiveness. The move would almost completely stop dealing damage too.

That's one thing I'd actually like to see them try to implement in the new games, real crowd reactions to what you're doing.

(I haven't played much of the most recent games so maybe they did)

Nah, not really. The current games, much like the current product, puts more emphasis on the commentators than the crowds. Its not uncommon for crowds to be dead silent during a finishing move.

I've always felt that Warzone was the difference maker for (American) wrestling video games, getting the games away from cheap Mortal Kombat rip-offs into something that resembled actual wrestling. It also had a great deal to do with getting me back in to the WWF, as I was pretty solidly WCW at the time. I doubt it's aged well (I have it somewhere), and Acclaim was never quite able to really do anything better (just more with the sequel and the ECW games, before they completely forgot how to do anything with LOW), but I think it was a significant game.

Also, one time where a completely inaccurate roster made for a much better game.

And I don't think any game has been able to do a better crowd than the Acclaim games.

That and WCW/NWO World Tour. I think World Tour came before Warzone did. That game laid the groundwork for the later AKI games that people love so much.

Backstage Assault was great if you wanted to play a wrestling game with no actual wrestling, and absolutely no wrestling ring.

I didn't have a 64. I only got to leech AKI goodness at friends' houses.

World Tour made Ultimo Dragon my favorite wrestler at the time because I thought everything he did in that game was so damn cool

At most, I think I did that maybe my first match. After that, even during my second match, I at least knew enough to do stuff like running clotheslines, and move or two. After a while, IMHO, Warzone combos were relatively easy to learn and implement. Granted, I did not always know what move went with which combo, but I usually knew I was going to him something, whether it be a belly-to-belly suplex or DDT. Only problem I ever had is that, at first, I did not know how to perform the finishers, as the menu nor the manual revealed them, so I had to do stuff like use Texas cloverleaf for Austin's "finisher." It was only later when I bought the strategy guide I could do the real finishers for guys.

The thing you have to realize though is that I'm really bad at video games and I was probably even worse when I was 10 years old

I played it again a few years ago, and yeah, Warzone has not aged well. In particular, the graphics. At the the time, I thought the graphics were almost "life like," especially in comparison to the N64 THQ games. Now? Not so much.

But at the time? It was a great freakin' game, IMHO. Certainly a sentimental favorite, as it was the game I got with my N64. Before that, the PS1 version was probably one of the first games of that era I was able to play for a extended time. Well, unless you count a minute or two of Super Mario 64 at the store a year or two before, only to die in the water outside of the castle, because I never played 3D game before that.

Apparently, Stone Cold and Rob Van Dam were backstage last night during Monday Night Raw.
