Yeah, but DirecTV isn't thinking clearly as there are likely fans that don't have access to broadband internet
I think that number is so low at this point that those fans aren't really worth worrying about.

UFC is probably going to do the same thing WWE is doing. If WWE can essentially sell their ppv's for $10/month, UFC could do the same for $20 a month plus have all their fights and Pride's archived. PPV is pretty much dead, the only group that's losing money with internet channels are Cable/Sat providers.

Like I said, it probably totals up to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, maybe even a cool million, that Direct is losing. Why a company would turn down money, even a dollar, is just a little odd imo.

Yeah it's pretty clear to me that they're purposely launching it right after EC so that Wrestlemania will be the first PPV people get to watch with WWE Network.

I agree that it's weird how WWE is pushing such a modern service since for a while now I've thought of them as a company that's behind the times a bit
I do not really think of WWE as "behind the times." Hell, WWE pushes the WWE app and Twitter to the point of regurgitation.

Nintendo, on other hand, most definitely.

That being said, the main reason WWE is going the Internet route is not because they think it's the future of TV, or anything. That's just PR propaganda. It's because there was little interest from the cable/satellite companies.

So, with this news, how is WWE justifying the decision financially to essentially offer ppv's for $10 when they normally sell for $50 or $60? Is WWE losing that much money to free streams? Is WWE going to be getting paid directly through advertisers, thereby cutting out the USA/SyFy middleman, that's so appealing to this offer?
Huh? Middleman is the cable/satellite companies, not USA and Syfy. First run episodes of Raw and SmackDown will still air on USA and Syfy.

Otherwise, the idea is that 1-2 million will subscribe to the WWE Network paying $10, if not more, and that will add up to more money then they receive from domestic buyrates. Also keep in mind they split PPV revenue with the cable/satellite company, so they only keep about $20-25 from PPV revenue, give or take. Personally, I have my doubts about the realistic profitability of this network, but that's the idea.

Because they do not want to set a standard. That's why. Currently, cable/satellite providers such as DirecTV have it in the contract that WWE, UFC, Boxing, etc. cannot have a PPV event on the Internet for a lower price than is offered on their service. So, with the WWE network having WWE PPV events as part of the package at a much lower price than PPV, it violates that contract. So, if DirecTV allows WWE to break the contract, it opens the doors for others such as UFC and Boxing to either break the contract as well, or use that as leverage to negotiate bigger percentage of PPV revenue.

No, if you're a smart company run by smart people, you re-negotiate the contract and say that "we'll continue to show WWE ppv's but, for 20% more. We'll pay you the $10 for each ppv buy and keep the rest" which would give DirecTV a better deal. DTV is still losing money, but the ppv market is dying anyway and DTV and other providers might as well milk the cow for as long as possible. Anything less than that makes DTV look like a pouting little Russian model genie.

PPV is not dying. UFC and Boxing are doing great numbers on PPV. That's just WWE PR propaganda.

And again, there's more at risk here than WWE money. If DirecTV allows WWE to walk over them, that opens the door for everyone else to walk all over them as well, and DirecTV makes more money from UFC than they do WWE. A lot more.

Most of the mainstream media coverage about WWE network has been really positive but this article is kinda infuriating:

Ironically, much of the WWE programming on TV is from NBC Universal. Lawrence Lewitinn's going to be hung from the pole by his briefs.

By the way, the "mom's basement" comment is uncalled for.

It always bugs me how so many non-wrestling fans have to act like they're "above it" by talking about how it's fake. All wrestling fans beyond 10 years old know that too.

^ That's what was missing from Raw last night, Barrett telling everybody there are no jobs in Rhode Island. 9% unemployment, highest in the nation.

I have no earthly idea why someone would want to continue ordering PPVs the traditional way instead of going the WWE network route.

If people want to watch on their TV and don't have a gaming console/Roku/etc, buying one of those things will be well worth the initial investment because it would save a lot of money in the long run anyway.
Same reason there's still a niche marketplace for print media, like magazines and newspapers. Some just prefer old way of doing things.

Plus, not everyone has great Internet.

Wrestling is fake, so was The Office, Seinfeld, and others of the most-watched programs on television.

You don't like it, we do. And we don't give a crap about your opinion :P
