LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England -- Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood were safely back in the clubhouse and scratching around for positives by the time the lead group had even started their final rounds at the British Open. This wasnt the way it was supposed to be. As the second- and third-ranked players in the world, they came to Royal Lytham & St. Annes ready to lead the European charge with No. 1 Luke Donald. After horrible weeks on the Lancashire links, they left beaten men and will be overtaken in the rankings on Monday by a rejuvenated Tiger Woods. "You try to force it and youre maybe trying too hard and things dont go your way -- that happened this week," was McIlroys assessment of his four days at Lytham after finishing at 8-over 288 and a tie for 60th. The 39-year-old Westwood has now gone winless in 59 majors. Is time running out for one of the best players never to win a major? "Life begins at 40, so they tell me," he said, more in hope than expectation. He was tied for 45th on 6 over. Of Europes big three, the consistent Donald looks in the best shape ahead of next months U.S. PGA Championship at Kiawah Island. Like Westwood, he is still searching for his first major title and admits he gets more anxious as the grand-slam tournaments approach. But he didnt let his head drop as a string of birdie chances went begging over the weekend, preventing him making a run at the leaders. A final-round 69 was one of the best of the day, and left him on 2 under and tied for fifth with Graeme McDowell. "Ill take a lot of positives away from this week," said Donald, who had putts lip out on Nos. 7, 9 and 12. "Certainly Ill leave this week knowing that my game is definitely good enough to win majors. "Ill come away from here with a lot of confidence knowing that my game tee to green was easily good enough to win this week." McIlroys troubles at Lytham will do nothing to silence the critics who say the Northern Irishmans game is stuttering as a direct result of his relationship with tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. "Im obviously very disappointed because I felt like I was coming in here playing pretty well," said McIlroy, who had missed four of his previous six cuts in a barren spring and early summer. "I had a really nice first round (67), set myself up well for the week and then just started to struggle after that. So its just disappointing." McIlroy, who shot a second straight 73 Sunday, felt there were positives to take into his next event, the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone. "I had a good practice session on the range (Saturday) night and feel like I found something good there," the 2011 U.S. Open champion said. "So thats something that I can work on this week and look forward to getting to Akron and trying to play there." Having said in his pre-tournament news conference that he fancied his chances coming into the British Open, Westwood acknowledged those comments had been slightly misleading. "I didnt have much of a game coming in here. So I didnt expect too much," a forlorn Westwood said after his 72 on Sunday. "Its one of those things. You play golf long enough you have no problem with it." A pull shot that has crept into his game of late returned at Lytham, costing him three shots in his final round. "You just learn to live with it," Westwood said, "and just keep working on it." Cheap NFL Jerseys from china .S. mens Olympic basketball team beat Britain 118-78 on Thursday in an exhibition game. LeBron James added 16 points and Russell Westbrook had 15 for the Americans, who built a 40-point lead early in the fourth quarter against their inexperienced and overmatched opponent, and every basket from there seemed to be a dunk. David Lee had 15 points as Golden State lost for the first time in four preseason games. Toronto was one of six MLS teams in Thursdays lottery and held a 57.Each week, TSN.ca NFL Editor Justin Boone will run down the top waiver wire pickups with a focus on the coming week and rest of the season. QUARTERBACKS Christian Ponder (at Lions)Last Week - 21/35, 198 passing yards, 2 TDs, 7 carries, 33 rushing yardsHopefully you scooped up the Vikings quarterback after seeing Ponder on our waiver wire list after Week 1. Ponder is now coming off his best game of the season and it happened against one of the leagues best defences. With wide receiver Jerome Simpson set to rejoin an offence that already features Percy Harvin, Kyle Rudolph and Adrian Peterson, the Vikings have put together a solid young core of playmakers for Ponder to work with. Andy Dalton (at Jacksonville)Last Week - 19/27, 328 passing yards, 3 TDs, 1 INTThe Bengals went on the road and mounted a strong attack against an injury-depleted Redskins defence. Dalton put together his second straight 300-yard, three-touchdown game. Sure, the Bengals passer has picked on the Browns and Redskins in those two weeks, but next up is the Jaguars defence that hasnt exactly been a shutdown unit so far this year. Others to consider - Ryan Fitzpatrick (vs. Patriots), Kevin Kolb (vs. Dolphins), Shaun Hill (vs. Vikings, if Matthew Stafford is out) RUNNING BACKS Mikel Leshoure (vs. Vikings)Last Week - 30 touches, 134 yards, 1 TDLeshoure exploded onto the scene, instantly becoming the lead ball carrier in the Lions backfield. If by some miracle he is still on your waiver wire, spare no expense acquiring him. Ryan Williams (vs. Dolphins)Last Week - 14 touches, 95 yardsWilliams received more touches than Beanie Wells in Week 3 and the results were clear. Williams is a far more explosive back, averaging 6.4 yards per carry, while Wells rumbled to only 2.3 YPC. Williams gained confidence as the game went on and despite the questionable offensive line in Arizona, Williams was still able to make plays. With Wells potentially dealing with turf toe, Williams is an intriguing pickup this week. Pierre Thomas (at Packers)Last Week - 10 touches, 66 yardsWhile its difficult to explain whats happening with the Saints this season, its even more challenging to understand their backfield. Darren Sproles was purely involved in the receiving game in the first two weeks, but led the club in carries in Week 3. Thomas, who has been their main ball carrier, became the passing back last week, with four catches for 55 yards. Meanwhile, former first round pick Mark Ingram has done next to nothing. Sproles is the back to own here, but Thomas value is increasing.dddddddddddd Bilal Powell (vs. 49ers)Last Week - 12 touches, 64 yardsJets head coach Rex Ryan has already said that Powell will likely carve into Shonn Greenes carries. Its not surprising, since Greene has been highly ineffective as the starter. Powell had a better YPC in Week 3 and generally looks like the better back in the Jets offence. Stash him on your bench and see if he can wrestle the job away from Greene full-time. Others to consider - Daniel Thomas/Lamar Miller (at Cardinals, if Reggie Bush is out), Tashard Choice (vs. Patriots, if C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson are out), Lance Ball/Ronnie Hillman (vs. Raiders, if Willis McGahee is out) WIDE RECEIVERS Jerome Simpson (at Lions)Last Week - SuspendedIn the pre-season, Simpson was touted as one of the stars of Vikings training camp. Now he returns from his suspension, into an offence that has performed better than expected through three weeks. Simpson will give the Vikings the deep threat they have been lacking and with Harvin and Rudolph drawing attention, Simpson could be an interesting fantasy player as well. Nate Burleson (vs. Vikings)Last Week - 10 catches 69 yards, 1 TDAll the attention was on Titus Young coming into the season, but its been the veteran Burleson who has remained the Lions second option on the outside. Dont trust Youngs stat-line from last week (5-75-1), since most of his production came on a 46-yard Hail Mary that fell into his hands at the end of regulation. Burleson is still getting the job done and you cant argue with his 17 catches already this season. Others to consider - Andrew Hawkins (at Jaguars), Cecil Shorts (vs. Bengals), T.Y. Hilton (Bye) TIGHT ENDS Kyle Rudolph (at Lions)Last week - 5 catches, 36 yards, 2 TDsMuch like Ponder and Leshoure, I hope you took our advice in previous weeks and picked up Rudolph. If you did, he rewarded you with two touchdowns last week and has three so far on the year. With Harvin being a smaller, speedier receiver, Rudolph gives the Vikings a big red zone target and is emerging as a low end TE1 the rest of the way. Fred Davis (at Buccaneers)Last Week - 7 catches, 90 yardsDavis was certainly drafted in your league, but if another owner dropped him due to his poor showings in the first two games, then this is your tie to strike. Davis led the Redskins in receiving this week and should be a threat in their offence on a weekly basis. Others to consider - Joel Dreessen (vs. Raiders), Jordan Cameron (at Ravens), Heath Miller (Bye) ' ' '
