The Los Angeles Dodgers proved, under new ownership last season, that they are willing to spend to contend and made a big splash on the free agent market over the weekend. Numbers Game looks at the Dodgers addition of starting pitcher Zack Greinke. The Dodgers Get: RHP Zack Greinke. The prize of the free agent pitching market, 29-year-old Zack Greinke has been one of the games elite starters over the last five seasons, posting a 70-43 record with 3.39 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 8.8 K/9. For the advanced stats crowd, Greinke has a fWAR (www.fangraphs.com) of 28.5 over those five seasons, fifth-best among major league starters, trailing only Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia. With those numbers, and the 2009 Cy Young Award on his resume already, Greinke has the credentials to be a staff ace, but doesnt have to be with the Dodgers, since they already have Clayton Kershaw. When he first arrived in the big leagues, Greinke was lauded for being a pitcher, but wasnt considered overpowering, striking out 5.9 batters per nine innings through his first two seasons. However, Greinke evolved, dialing up his fastball an extra few miles per hour (89.1 MPH in 2004 up to a career-high 94.0 MPH in 2007, before settling at 92.4 MPH last season). Something that bears watching with Greinke, then, is that he started experimenting with a cutter last season, throwing it more than 10% of the time according to Fan Graphs. While the results werent immediately favourable, if Greinke gains further command of the pitch, he could be even more formidable and he throws fewer sliders and change-ups as a result. Greinke was signed for six years and $147-million (with an opt-out after three seasons, accoding to Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal), which is obviously a massive price tag and a deal of that length presents risk for even the most durable pitchers, but its a function of Greinke being the hottest pitching commodity on the free agent market and the Dodgers using their financial might to build a World Series contender. Adding Greinke to a rotation that includes Kershaw, Josh Beckett, Chris Capuano, Aaron Harang, Ted Lilly, Chad Billingsley and recently-signed Korean import Ryu Hyun-jin actually leaves the Dodgers with too much pitching depth, an enviable problem that can be resolved with further dealing. Greinke was brought to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last season and the Angels rotation has undergone some changes this offseason, letting Greinke and Dan Haren depart, leaving them with Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, former Brave Tommy Hanson and young starters Jerome Williams and Garrett Richards. Looking at that group, its conceivable that the Angels might be willing to discuss some of the Dodgers excess pitching. Goetze equalized in the 74th minute, when he controlled Marco Reus corner with his chest and struck the dropping ball sweetly inside the far post. Toni Kroos broke the deadlock after a period of concerted Bayern pressure in the 67th, eluding Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic on the edge of the area before striking the ball perfectly with his left boot to send it beyond the helpless Roman Weidenfeller in goal. Weidenfeller made three outstanding saves to save the point late in the game. Bayern defender Holger Badstuber was carried off on a stretcher in the first half. Bayern confirmed he damaged cruciate ligaments in his right knee. Rising Germany star Julian Draxler rescued a 1-1 draw for stuttering Schalke against Borussia Moenchengladbach earlier Saturday. The 19-year-old Draxler scored with four minutes remaining to cancel out Igor de Camargos 62nd-minute opener for the visitors. Schalke has just five points from its past six games. Stefan Kiessling scored his ninth goal of the season for Bayer Leverkusen to beat Nuremberg 1-0 and consolidate second place. Adam Szalai joined Kiessling as one of the leagues top scorers when he scored with a superb header in the last minute for 10-man Mainz to beat Hannover 2-1. Elsewhere, Augsburg and Freiburg drew 1-1 in a bad-tempered game, and Stuttgart held on with 10 men for a 1-0 win at Greuther Fuerth. In an effort to halt Schalkes alarming loss of form, Huub Stevens switched goalkeepers before the game, bringing in Timo Hildebrand for "more experience" in place of the 22-year-old Lars Unnerstall. However, the former Germany keeper should have done better to stop de Camargo scoring with Moenchengladbachs first real chance when he got his hand to the ball. Marc-Andre ter Stegen then produced a fingerttip save to deny Draxler an immediate response, before Jermaine Jones missed two good chances to pull one back.dddddddddddd Stevens brought off the ineffective Klaas-Jan Huntelaar with 20 minutes remaining, and it was substitute Teemu Pukki who crossed for Draxler to preserve Schalkes 17-game unbeaten record at home against Moenchengladbach. Dieter Hecking was making his 100th appearance as Nuremberg coach in the Bundesliga, but was unable to celebrate as Leverkusen won its fourth game in succession. Kiessling scored in the 37th, though TV replays suggested the former Nuremberg striker was offside when he received Andre Schuerrles pass. In Mainz, Nicolai Mueller opened the scoring in the 10th, before Christian Schulz equalized for Hannover in the 28th. It looked good for the visitors when Christian Wetklo was sent off four minutes into the second half, but Szalai sealed an unlikely win for the home side. In Augsburg, Tobias Werner scored in the ninth minute for the home side, but Freiburg equalized in the 29th when the rebound fell kindly for Jonathan Schmid to score after goalkeeper Mohamed Amsif had saved Jan Rosenthals effort. Stuttgart forward Shinji Okazaki scored before the break with a header from the rebound after Vedad Ibisevic had shot his penalty straight at goalkeeper Wolfgang Hesl, who was making his Bundesliga debut. Fuerth hit the post afterward, and Stuttgart defender Serdar Tasci was sent off in the 53rd for a dangerous tackle on Milorad Pekovic, who had to go off. Fuerth hit the crossbar twice and was denied by the outstanding Sven Ulreich, as the visitors climbed to seventh. Fans across all stadiums marked their dissatisfaction with the leagues security proposals by curtailing their singing for the first 12 minutes, 12 seconds. Clubs are due to vote on the German Football Leagues proposals on Dec. 12. The fans want to be consulted more about a range of measures designed to reduce violence in football. ' ' '
