ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -- Barry Brust may be in a job-share program this season but hes made the best of every chance hes been given. Brust made 29 saves on Tuesday to preserve the Abbotsford Heats 3-0 win over the Lake Erie Monsters in American Hockey League action. It was the 18th shutout in Brusts AHL career and his second of the season. He has allowed just one goal in his three games played this year. He has been sharing the crease with Danny Taylor (seven games) and Leland Irving (two games). "Its a nice feeling," said Brust of his stellar 0.33 goals-against average and 0.987 save percentage. "Its a product more of the way the teams played. Weve got some pretty lucky bounces. The games have been pretty tight, so that always has guys blocking shots and diving in front of pucks a little more. "Its a nice little run and hopefully we can continue it." The 29-year-old goalie has earned the adoration of his teammates not just for his reliability but also his unique aggressive style and his outgoing personality. "Hes been outstanding," said left winger Sven Baertschi. "Its a lot of fun to watch him. Hes a special goalie. Hes doing well. Its always great when you can rely on a great goalie back there. "If you make mistakes he makes sure there arent any goals for them." Brust signed with Abbotsford in the off-season to challenge last years post-season starter (Taylor) and the Calgary Flames top prospect (Irving) for the starting job. Having played for Heat head coach Troy Ward in the past, fitting in the dressing room has been an easy transition. "Theres obviously a familiarity with the coaching staff that Ive had before and it doesnt take me too long usually to get involved with the guys and feel like a big part of the team," said Brust. "As tough as it is having three goalies, its also two other guys that have things in common with you. Them being great people, its been easy to mesh with them." Krys Kolanos scored the winner for Abbotsford (8-1-3) in the second period. Baertschi and captain Quintin Laing added empty-net goals. Kolanos, who fought Tyson Barrie earlier in the second, took a pass from T.J. Brodie and picked the top corner, glove side, for his fourth of the season 12:52 into the period. "He played extremely hard," said Ward. "It was one of the better skating games Krys has had for our team this year. So it was important for Krys. Anytime you have passion and emotion in hockey usually it results in something positive for you. Krys was dialled-in from the get-go." Kolanos now holds Abbotsfords franchise record for career goals with 34, surpassing Cam Cunning. He joined the Heat on a tryout early last season and has since signed a two-way contract with the Calgary Flames. The Heat are now in their fourth season. Abbotsford is tied with the Charlotte Checkers with 19 points for first in the Western Conference, leapfrogging Lake Erie (9-5-0). Sami Aittokallio made 36 saves in net for the Monsters. "If I had to pick a star of the game I would have picked their goalie," said Ward. "He was outstanding, especially low. He was extremely quick. He did give us rebounds but he took away the lower part of the net consistently all night long. My guess is the way theyve rotated their goalies, I dont know if well see him back tomorrow but regardless we need to get to rebounds." Abbotsford outshot Lake Erie 14-9 in the first period but only had one quality scoring chance. Carter Bancks one-timed a pass from Tyler Ruegsegger in the slot but Aittokallio kicked his pad out to make the stop with about four minutes to go in the opening frame. The two got together for another scoring chance just under three minutes into the second period. Carter took a shot on net and the rebound came right to Ruegsegger in front but the Lakewood, Colo., natives shot was stopped by Aittokallio, keeping the game scoreless. The Heat kept up the offensive pressure all period. First, Baertschi was stopped on a breakaway with about eight minutes to go in the frame and then a moment later Abbotsford finally got one past Aittokallio when Kolanos scored. The Monsters best chance to beat Brust was a quick one-timer by Karl Stollery from the slot but the Heats goalie snared the puck with his glove, keeping his shutout bid intact with 10 minutes remaining in the game. chinacheapnfljerseysstore . And a large chunk of their recent run has come without two of their top players. So, imagine the big boost the Patriots will receive from having one of their best players on each side of the ball return for what is being billed as the game of the year. After practicing in a limited capacity all week, starting left guard Logan Mankins and standout rookie right defensive end Chandler Jones are both listed as questionable for Monday nights much-hyped matchup against the first-place Houston Texans (11-1), a game with major playoff ramifications for both teams. "Just got out there a little bit this week and tried to move around. Well see where it goes from today," said Mankins, who injured his ankle in the second half of New Englands victory over Buffalo on Nov. 11 and has missed the last three games. "We were just trying to do as much as we can. I cant do everything yet, so I guess we might find out Monday." Jones, the 21st overall selection in the draft and considered by many to still be a top candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year honours with six sacks, skipped the last two games with an ankle injury suffered during the first quarter of the Patriots (9-3) win over Indianapolis on Nov. 18. His status, he said, rests in the hands of coach Bill Belichick. "Ready to play against the Texans," Jones said. "We went out there and we won a championship and I wasnt out there. But Im still thankful to be a part of this team." Mankins, a four-time Pro Bowl player, has missed five games this season with various ailments, the second-most of his eight-year career. "Its been a couple games here and then miss a couple and then a couple here, miss a few. Its just one of those years I cant get on track yet," he said. "Every game you want to be out there, you just got to wait until youre ready to get out there." The pair couldnt have picked a more perfect time to return, either. Despite playing a pivotal part in the Patriots top-ranked offence and valiantly protecting quarterback Tom Brady amid constant change due to injuries, the Patriots offensive line certainly will be bolstered with Mankins out there as they prepare to face their stiffest test of the season. Houston defensive end J.J. Watt is wreaking havoc on just about every opposing offence hes faced thus far. The second-year standout ranks second in the league with 16 1/2 sacks and has knocked down 15 passes this year. Watts sensational season also has overshadowed thhe strong play of defensive end Antonio Smith, who has five sacks of his own, along with Watt forming one of the most feared pass rushes in the league.dddddddddddd "Hes a guy thats getting overlooked down there," Mankins said. "J.J. Watts getting a lot of attention deservedly, but Antonio Smiths a very good player. Hes a slippery guy inside that has good quickness, good power and he really understands how to work blockers, so he does a good job. "They get ahead and teams have to start throwing it to catch back up, so that plays right into their strength. Theyre a great pass-rushing team." Houston boasts a strong offence, too. In fact, quarterback Matt Schaub, running back Arian Foster and wide receiver Andre Johnson have combined to lead the leagues second-highest scoring attack -- behind only New England --making Jones return all the more important. "They have a great offensive line, they have great wide receivers and theyre quarterbacks good," Jones said. "Our job is just to bottle those guys up and eliminate the big play." Mankins extended absence has been somewhat of a surprise, though. Last season he played through a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, something he admitted during training camp this off-season, moments before acknowledging his extremely high pain threshold. So, playing in just more than half of New Englands games this year may point more to the severity of the injury. "Theres some injuries you can play through, some restrict your ability to play," Mankins explained. "When it restricts your ability, you cant play. Youre just going to hurt the team if you just get beat all the time. "Its been tough," he added. "But it is what it is. You learn to deal with it. Ive been pretty fortunate most of my career. I guess it happens to everyone sooner or later."? Of course, Mankins wants to suit up. However, he wont jeopardize the rest of the season to play in a game on Monday night, against one of the best teams in the league, with possible post-season seeding on the line. "When Im healthy, Ill come back," he said. "Whether its this week, next week, the following week, its up to my body when Im going to play again." Jones, on the other hand, seems ready to roll for his first career Monday night game, and the Patriots lone one this season. "Its a primetime game. You know, Monday Night Football, you grew up watching Monday Night Football," he said. "And for the Patriots to have the opportunity to go out there and showcase our talent on a Monday Night Football game, thats a great opportunity." ' ' '
