DETROIT -- Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run double during a three-run eighth inning that sent the Detroit Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night. The Tigers trailed 3-0 before scoring twice in the sixth and taking the lead in their last at-bat. With men on first and third, Peralta hit a line drive just fair down the left-field line off Garrett Richards (3-3). Alex Avila then added an RBI single. Octavio Dotel (4-2) threw two scoreless innings for the win. Jose Valverde pitched a perfect ninth for his 26th save in 30 chances. Vernon Wells homered for the Angels, who had won four straight. Dan Haren, who threw two complete games against Detroit in July 2011, went only 5 2-3 innings in this one. He allowed two runs and eight hits with seven strikeouts. Rookie Drew Smyly allowed one earned run and four hits in six innings for the Tigers in his return from a strained muscle in his right side. He struck out six and walked two. Albert Pujols missed a third straight game for the Angels with a right calf injury. Miguel Cabrera was the designated hitter for Detroit -- hes been battling right ankle soreness. Cabrera hit a drive to deep right-centre leading off the eighth, but Torii Hunter was able to make the catch after nearly overrunning the ball from right field. Hunter also took away a potential extra-base hit from Cabrera with a running catch in the opposite direction in the fourth. The Tigers kept swinging, though, and Prince Fielder and Andy Dirks both singled before Peraltas big hit. Smyly was starting in place of Doug Fister, who has been bothered by tightness in his right groin. He allowed a third-inning solo homer to Wells and didnt get much help from his defence after that. Second baseman Omar Infante threw away a routine grounder by Bobby Wilson for an error later in the third, and Wilson eventually scored on Howie Kendricks single. The following inning, Kendrys Morales lifted a deep fly ball to centre. Austin Jackson was able to run it down without too much trouble, but he ended up dropping it for his first error since June 29, 2011. Erick Aybar followed with a double to drive in Morales. Detroit chased Haren in the sixth with an RBI double by Delmon Young and a bloop single to left by Dirks that scored Young. Jordan Walden came on and got out of that jam by getting Peralta on a groundout. He also got one out in the seventh before Richards came on. The Tigers missed a chance to score in the second when Fielder doubled to right but went sprawling past second base when Hunters throw came in. He was tagged out, and Young followed with a double. NOTES: Wilson hit a drive down the left-field line that went foul in the fourth, narrowly missing a two-run HR that would have made it 5-0. ... Kendrick extended his hitting streak to 12 games. ... Young and Fielder both had three hits. ... Mark Trumbo struck out three times for the Angels. ... Detroit RHP Max Scherzer (13-6) starts Sunday against Los Angeles RHP Ervin Santana (7-10). http://www.authenticjaguarsshop.com/Clay-Harbor-Jaguars-Jersey . They didnt have to. The injury occurred in the second period of the Penguins game against the Boston Bruins when Hossa collided knee-on-knee with Glen Murray. He immediately left the ice and did not return. The 29-year old Hossa was the Penguins prize acquisition at the NHLs Trade Deadline on Tuesday as he came from the Atlanta Thrashers along with forward Pascal Dupuis for forwards Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen, top prospect Angelo Esposito and a first-round draft pick. http://www.authenticjaguarsshop.com/Jason-Babin-Jaguars-Jersey . Even though hes now the starter nothing felt different to Wilson. Maybe thats because for the last 50 games that have counted, Wilson has known hes the starting quarterback. Its a streak that will continue when the Seahawks begin the regular season next week.WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are getting a potent part of their offensive attack back just in time for their first home game of the season. Cory Watson, one of the teams best receivers last season, is returning from injury and will be in the lineup when the Bombers host the Edmonton Eskimos on Thursday. "Hes physical, hes fast, he can break tackles," Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice said Monday. "Were excited to have him back." In 2011, Watsons second season with the Bombers, he led the team in catches (69) and was third in receiving yards (793). Watson admits he has a lot of work to do in order to get up to full speed. But he said he feels good and the team is ready to seek a little redemption after losing 42-10 to Edmonton in Alberta on July 13. It wont be easy, though, as Edmonton (3-1) has the leagues stingiest defence that will definitely pose a huge challenge for Winnipeg (0-4). "I think were up for the challenge," Watson said. "They have some weaknesses in their defence we need to exploit and, with our gameplan this week, I think well do good." Watson brings more depth to a receiving corps which has already been one of the strongest parts of Winnipegs offence this season, thanks in large part to the addition of rookie Chris Matthews. "Its great to have Cory back," said quarterback Alex Brink, who will make his second straight start Thursday as incumbent Buck Pierce remains sidelined with an injured foot. "As a veteran hes a leader among the receivers.dddddddddddd "He brings a toughness to our receiving corps that I think is pretty important. Hes really big for us in the running game but then in the pass game he provides a savvy that weve got to have out there." Winnipegs run game improved significantly with Chad Simpsons return from the injured list last week. He had 91 yards rushing and 31 yards receiving in a hard-fought 25-22 road loss to Toronto. "Im ready to go, second game back and its a home game so I mean thats going to give our team a lot of morale," said Simpson. Simpson says the Bombers know what they have to do to beat Edmonton and sees little chance of a repeat of their earlier blowout. "A lot of miscommunication, a lot of beating ourselves up, no, I dont think it will happen again," he said. "Weve got to play a complete game. "Last week (in Toronto) we fought well . . . weve just got to build off that." Watsons return also comes with an added bonus as the native of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., improves the Bombers import ratio. Injuries have taken many starters out of the lineup and the Winnipeg front office has been busy flying in players. One of the latest is import defensive lineman J.T. Gilmore. He was signed to the practice roster over the weekend but LaPolice says Gilmore might see action Thursday. "He can push the pocket a little bit or he can push guys around," LaPolice said. "For a 285-pound (player), hes got a lot of power." ' ' '
