Martinez, a first baseman in the majors for 16 years, has been a New York Yankees special assistant and worked an analyst for the YES Network. Martinez had a career average of .271 with 339 home runs for the Yankees, Mariners, Cardinals and Rays. Redmond landed his first big league managerial job last week when he was hired to replace Ozzie Guillen. I do not know Buck Pierce, having only met him once very briefly years ago, but from what Ive heard, hes a really good guy and a great competitor. For the second time at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Canada will enter into a synchronized swimming final in fourth place. Two days after Marie-Pier Boudreau Gagnon and Elise Marcotte placed fourth in the duet competition, Canadas team received a disappointing 94.400 points for its technical performance on Thursday. The finish put them behind Russia, China and Spain to place fourth ahead of Fridays free routine final. "I love the sport. I love the team. But there are parts I dont enjoy," said Canadian swimmer Tracy Little. "The judging side is out of our control." A poor draw may have left Canada in the lurch for their team technical routine, as it set them up to perform just moments after the close of the home teams swim. Canada chose its London 2012 theme - FIFA Soccer - to appeal to the British crowd, the Canadians said. The hope was that with an impressed crowd, the judges might look at the swimmers a little more carefully. "In Beijing, we did the Chinese astrology, which was again was based on the country to get everybody involved," said Little, who was also a member of the Canadian team that finished fourth at the 2008 Olympic Games in China. "All of the Chinese athletes were all, ‘Oh! I know what it says on your suit! Because it was written in Chinese," she said. "We always have the best themes when we get to the competition. Even if at first it seems weird, you end up noticing that our routines are the most fun and entertaining." But while cheers for Team GBs swim raised the rafters in the Olympic Aquatics Centre on Thursday afternoon, the whistles and hoots were comparatively flat and lacklustre when the Canadians paraded onto the deck minutes later. Canadas theme was evident in every detail of its routine, from the choreography to the music and the soccer ball detail on the swimmers caps. "I thought the audience would be going wilder for this theme," said Carolyn Waldo, a synchronized swimming double gold medallist turned CTVOlympics analyst. "We heard [the fans cheering for Great Britain] for sure when we were back there waiting," Little said. "It didnt stress us. We got out there and I actually heard them cheering when we were swwimming, too.dddddddddddd. It was good sporting for them." Competing in their first synchronized swimming Olympic team competition, Great Britain advanced into Fridays final in sixth place. Canada has a strong history in synchronized swimming, and picked up team silver and bronze at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, respectively. Throughout the past 12 years, however, Canada has slipped from the podium. The hope was for a resurgence in London, but with a 1.800 point gap between Canada and third-place Spain ahead of Fridays free swim, a podium finish will be a big challenge. "I havent watched it yet, but we swam as a team, we went out there, we did like we trained, and if there were mistakes, we will work on it for finals," Little said. "Were ready to go out and keep fighting." Russia, scoring a competition-leading 98.100 for a technical swim to Denis Garnizovs Russian Dance, is aiming for its fourth straight Olympic title in the event. China was second with 97.000, while Spain, with 96.200, was third. Spain narrowly edged China for the duet silver medal on Tuesday, and its swimmers are aiming to repeat as a team. "Tomorrow we will be better than the Chinese, although they are technically very strong, and we have a good surprised lined up," said Spanish swimmer Alba Cabello Rosilla. "We will be like mermaids in the ocean." Canadas free routine is "Circus" themed, and the swimmers worked with Canadian performance powerhouse Cirque du Soleil on their program. "Its always really good to get another opinion or ideas," said Canadian team member Karine Thomas, of working with Cirque, "It just helps in the creative juices. Its really good to have them around. We go back and forth with them, too. Were able to talk to them and we throw them ideas and they throw some back, so its really good. "You always want to come up with new things, you know? I think Canada is probably the best country for that, too. We like to start trends. Its really a Canadian thing to be really innovative in what we do. We look to the best and just try to even do better, or cooler." Watch the team free program final on Friday at 10:00am et/7:00am pt on CTVOlympics.ca ' ' '
