Character Name: Yance Wester Faction: Titans Gender: Male Age: 32 Birthday: 0055.04.09 (9th April) Blood Type: O Ethnicity: European States Character Paradigm: Plugger Specialty: Razor Description ![]() Living aboard the EFF’s Energy Fleet, the Yance has the build borne of the mandatory exercise regimes required of all personnel during the long journeys between the Earth Sphere and Jupiter. His skin tone is Caucasian, hailing from the old European States, but bares the healthy tone of someone exposed deliberately to the artificial lighting of ships for years. Height: 5’8” Weight: 88kg Hair Color and Style: Light Brown Eye Color: Blue Identifying Marks: Deep scar across left eye. Skin Tone: Caucasian Build: Athletic Clothing: On duty Yance’s uniform is maintained within the standards expected by the strict regulations of the EFF drilled into him during the One Year War – the one personalized element being his call-sign patch. Life aboard the EF’s Jupiter Energy Fleet has made Yance accustomed to a life out of ‘civvies’, when he does unwind, he’s usually in his issue casual kit, Titan-branded t-shirt and gym trousers. Family Mother: Dara Wester Father: Jan Wester Siblings: Alahna and Jesh Wester Personality It’s a long and lonely journey through the black to Jupiter and it breeds two kinds of personnel – there are those who spend the whole journey wishing they were home, those who immediately apply for reassignment or leave the service on return. Then there are those who stay on for another trip, these latter personnel become so accustomed to the life aboard ship that going back to civilian life is such a jarring change from the recycled air and the strict military order. Yance belongs to the latter group, duty and loyalty is simply drilled into him, it can be expected because he has ate, slept and breathed the military life in that sterile, strict environment for several years. Its why he was selected for the Titans unit, because while he was no fanatic to its anti-Spacenoid prejudice, his pilot record is unblemished by disobedience the sign of a good toy soldier, obedient to his seniors, loyal to the Federation Forces, and his comrades. Perhaps his only floor is that Yance remains morally uncompromised, unaware of the Titans role in 30 Bunch or any of the areas where it is beginning to toe the line between what is morally acceptable for a military unit to do to keep order. History The European States haven’t changed much in the Universal Century, the old buildings stand where they’ve always stood, surrounded now by more modern constructions it’s true, but Europe holds onto its history even as an integrated part of the Earth Federation. Yance had a healthy childhood, an educated middle class boy with plenty of prospects for him around the globe, but even as the dream of the space age had faded for many the young boy saw adventure yet to be had in the stars – the romantic temptation to become a pilot for the Earth Federation Space Forces and see Earth Sphere from above, and to go beyond it. In 0077 when he completed his University education, he signed up to become a Pilot Officer in the EFF, at the time, the Federation’s Jupiter Energy Fleet had just returned to the Earth Sphere and in the recruitment cycle Yance was wrapped up in the sense of adventure there was to be had in flying as part of the fleet escort, after all, even by 0077 relatively few had been as far as the distant gas giant. The first journey was a hard one, though escort duty of the fleet was only a nominal duty given the minimal security threat presented by the break-away Zeon faction at the time and the treaties that protected Jovian transports, it was a long trip out to that distant and mysterious planet. But Yance settled well into the lifestyle, the regular drills and simulated fighter scrambles, the stored nutrient food, the recycled air and downtime limited to the ship alone, the opportunity to see the asteroid belt, and distant Mars, before arriving at the largely automated refueling stations above Jupiter. Despite the homesickness that dogged him on the first leg of the journey, the mystery of Jupiter and its moons, flying training and recon above the great alien world kept that spirit of adventure alive in Yance, and upon return to the Earth Sphere he remained with the fleet for a second trip out to those stars. As the fleet left the Earth Sphere again in late 0078 tensions between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon were deteriorating, the news of war breaking out reached them on Jovian approach and the situation aboard the fleet became significantly more tense. Though the independent Jupiter Energy Fleet remained neutral, the Zeon and Federation Energy Fleets had only the protection of treaties which…as news of Operation British flooded in, were barely protection at all. Though the Antarctic Treaty would later agree mutual non-aggression between the fleets, the initial months led to a period of skirmishes in Jovian orbit as the Helium Carriers refueled – skirmishes in which FF-S3 Saberfish was horrendously outmatched by the MS-05 Zaku’s utilized by the Zeon escort fleets. In those early days the Federation escort fleets lost huge numbers of pilots in skirmishes that quickly devolved into delaying actions against the Zaku and the number of shoot-downs of Mobile Suits numbered in the tens. In this atmosphere of hostility Yance excelled, thrusting himself to the forefront of the fighter screens of the Federation escorts, and in those early months of the war, he was one of the few Federation pilots that could count a successful shoot-down of a Zaku, not a total destruction but severely damaging one enough to take it out of the fighting. As the Fleet made the return journey from the Jupiter Sphere harassment raids from both fleets became a clockwork part of life, and each time another handful of pilots would never return, claimed by the black. The Federation fleet was pushed to the edge cannibalizing damaged fighters to repair its surviving defenses, salvation came in the form of the Antarctic treaty, ending the Zeon attacks and allowing it to limp home in peace. When the Federation’s Energy Fleet returned at the height of the war, it was one of the first space forces to receive the newly rolled out RGM-79 Mobile suits, so essential was its protection, and although the Federation had the Antarctic Treaty promising the Energy Fleet’s safety – the EFF neither trusted the assurances of the Principality nor expected it to hold to them for long without choking off the one thing that kept the Federation Fleet afloat. Among the pilots selected for Mobile Suit training as the Fleet unloaded and made speed on its return, Yance never experienced the heavy fighting on the ground during the war, his experience in a suit one of recorded kills and simulations, rather than actual combat. What little combat the Mobile Suits of the Jupiter fleet saw came at the end of the war, where splinter Zeon forces and would-be pirates capitalized on the chaos of the recovering Earth Federation by attacking shipping – Yance’s third return to the Earth Sphere was one of the most harrowing, as not only did he get his first real taste of MS combat, but his return to Earth on shore leave brought distress to see his home town largely leveled by the fighting on the European Front. Though his back-pay was more that enough to save his family from a life as refugees it couldn’t take away the anger of the damage wrought by the disloyalty of the Zeon forces towards the Earth-sphere. In the years following like many career Federation Pilots, Yance practically sleep-walked into service under the Titans, his record as a soldier impeccable and unblemished, and his commendations quite extensive it was only logical that when the elite unit was formed he would be one of the pilots headhunted to form part of its Mobile Suit forces. Initially serving as part of the initial recruitment cycle as the Titans began to develop their structure, before his assignment to the Fifteenth Tactical Mobile Suit squadron – like the majority of Titan pilots, Yance is only aware of the ‘official’ story about 30 Bunch and keeps the more slanderous rumors out of mind, such is his obedience to the chain of command. |
